Today I’ve heard on the radio that this weekend is the last one for fall foliage watchers.
But what will keep my memory about this colorful fall’s season is this full of feelings photo journey of Oksana into her garden.
There are my humble attempts to interpret it.

Today I have occasionally come into my garden. And there has already come fall. It is so pity...
For some reasons you’ve been waiting for summer for a long time... But fall always comes all of a sudden.
You wake up once in the morning, look out into a window, and crimson leaves rested on grass...
The fall is dropped down like this fallen down leaf...

It's not so laconic like in Russian, but you can try to translate this passage.
I am looking forward to read your version.

В октябре 2006 в салоне книжного магазина Chapters пройдут беседы о пользе и удовольствии от чтения и перечитывания этих авторов.
Цель их – заинтересовать, поделиться знаниями, чтобы вы услышали живые голоса писателей, способных быть нашими современниками и собеседниками.

Проведет эти беседы Владимир Шацев, преподаватель словесности из Санкт-Петербурга.

Readings from Russia: 10 Great Russian Writers Come Alive at Chapters

Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Fedor Dostoevsky, Ivan Goncharov & Nikolai Gogol are among the great names of Russian writers in the nineteenth century. Their novels open us to a wide world of thought & emotion, tragedy & farce, brutality & compassion. And even though the nineteenth century may seen far behind us in time, the characters of these stories, their dramas & fates, can still speak to us in the twenty-first century. Their voices are just waiting to be heard…
Fortunately, there is one man who can help us hear those voices, who can give us the reasons to open a book we may have heard of (like War and Peace), but which we have never read, who can inspire us to take the time to listen to these voices who have so much to say to us – about Russia, about the struggle to love a wife, a husband, or a child, about a world of chaos & beauty & catastrophe, but most of all: about ourselves.
That man is Vladimir Shatsev, a prominent teacher of the great Russian writers of the nineteenth & twentieth centuries, whom you can meet at Chapters Runnymede during the month of October.
Before arriving in Canada, Vladimir worked in the schools & universities of St. Petersburg, developing the innovative ideas & attitudes towards teaching which won him the respect & enjoyment of his students, as well as international acclaim from the BBC, Radio Liberty in New York, & the International Harwich Festival in England.
When I first met Vladimir, I was struck by three things: his knowledge of the world of the books & writers he would speak about, his wonderful touches of humour & whimsy which put me at ease, & his genuine ability to share the humanity of these voices in a way that made me want to track down these titles & discover them for myself.
During October, Vladimir will be presenting brief introductions to 10 great Russian writers – 5 from the nineteenth century, & 5 from the twentieth century. You may have read – or heard of – some of these books, but you don’t need to have read any of them! Vladimir’s goal is to intrigue you with his knowledge, his humour & his wonderful grammatical errors, so that you can start to listen to those voices from another time, another country, which can still speak to all of us today.
Vladimir Shatsev will be appearing at Chapters Runnymede, each Tuesday in October at 7:30 p.m.

This movie, which first told the historical truth about the White Movement, its heroes and participants to the Russian people, was broadcast in December 2003, as the first phase in the return to Russia of her warrior-defender and her philosopher.

Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev: Generation Gap and More

Fathers and Sons is a Russian novel. Russian novel... It means that leading characters are passionate, often full of radical ideas, and a bit crazy.

In the middle of WWII when North America paid special attention to Russian culture, Sinclair Lewis wrote a foreword to the new edition of Fathers and Sons and thereby reintroduced this novel to a new generation of readers. I would like to do something similar now.

The novel Fathers and Sons, published in 1862, shocked Russian society. Both conservatives or liberals as well as radicals read this book enthusiastically, but they did not want to recognize themselves there.

This aroused readers' interest is comparable with people's reaction nowadays to bestsellers like The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. It is an example how a great number of people who disagree with the author’s concept, however continue to read and discuss it.

My comparison is a result of reflection. Among the many themes of The DaVinci Code is the hidden sexuality of Christian civilization. Among the many themes of Angels and Demons is Science. These two: the dedication of himself to Science and his barely controlled passions are the features of the leading character Evgeny Bazarov, a graduate student with plans to be a doctor. He believes only in what he himself has scientifically experienced. "A chemist who knows his business is twenty times as useful as any poet."

Bazarov is a nihilist. This nihilism sets out to denounce and deny all social and ethical values. "But allow me," began Nikolai Petrovich, "You deny everything, or to put it more precisely, you destroy everything... But one must construct, too, you know.""That is not our business... we must first clear the ground."

Vladimir Nabokov, in his "Lectures on Russian Literature" wrote: "He might have become, beyond the horizon of the novel, a great social thinker, a prominent physician, or an active revolutionary". I would like to add something to that, i.e. an active revolutionary might be the same person as a terrorist.

The love story in the novel is the most thrilling story. The beginning of this story is: "Anyhow, she’s delightful," said Arkady. "What a magnificent body," went on Bazarov. "How I would like to see it on the dissecting table." The ending of this story is: "Well, what I am to say to you? That I loved you? There was no sense in that even before, and less than even now. Love is a form, and my own form is already decaying. I do better to say how fine you are. Even now you are standing there, so beautiful."

It is worth reading and rereading, because true human passions are never old fashioned and always new.

It is about every reader, because the love triangle (or "love square") depicted here is familiar to everybody.

It is about every reader, who has ever discussed something, forgetting the goal of discussion, and having only the subconscious goal of impressing his or her companion.

It is about us because even if we have not participated in duels, we have dreamt of something like that.

Fathers and Sons is about everything, Life and Death in the final analysis, about Turgenev’s special philosophy of "eternal reconciliation and life without end".

It is first and foremost about the generation gap. It is for everybody who has ever argued with their parents or everybody who has been irritated or abused by the younger generation.

It is about yesterday, today, and the future. It is not a book, but a magic mirror now in your hand.

Sinclair Lewis wrote that Bazarov deserves the same degree of fame as Don Quixote or Sherlock Holmes. Oh, yes, and therefore, Ivan Turgenev with his best book, deserves the same fame as Miguelle De Cervantes and Arthur Conan Doyle. The book as well...

The XVI International AIDS Conference gets underway with the Opening Session at Rogers Centre on Sunday, August 13, 2006 starting at 7:00 pm. The keynote address will be given by Bill and Melinda Gates and will precede a musical spectacular featuring performances by Amanda Marshall, Chantal Kreviazuk, the Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace and a very special message from Alicia Keys to name a few. Appearances by Richard Gere and Olympia Dukakis are also expected. A limited number of tickets are available so purchase today!

Join Citytv, CHUM FM, MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic at Time to Deliver, the AIDS 2006 Concert featuring major recording artists to raise awareness and funds to fight HIV/AIDS taking place at Rogers Centre on Sunday, August 13.

The lineup of outstanding musical performers includes Amanda Marshall, Chantal Kreviazuk, the Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace, Alicia Keys, Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe, the Red Spirit Singers and Dancers, Massari, Blue Man Group, DJ Tiesto from The Netherlands and more.

Doors at the Rogers Centre will open at 5pm on Sunday, August 13. The Official Opening Session will begin at 7pm, and the concert will begin by 9pm. immediately following the Official Opening. A single ticket provides entry to the opening and the concert.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic both locally and globally through CANFAR, the NMCFC, and the AIDS Committee of Toronto Community Partners Fund, and will also support future scholarships for the next International AIDS Conference to be held in Mexico City in 2008.

XVI International AIDS Conference, Toronto, 13-18 August 2006

The AIDS 2006 Conference theme, Time to Deliver, underscores the continued urgency in bringing effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies to communities the world over. Twenty-five years after the first reports of what was later to be known as AIDS appeared in the CDC’s Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report, the magnitude of this epidemic demands increased accountability from all stakeholders to fulfill their commitments, be they financial, programmatic or political.

While additional resources and continued scientific research are critical to an effective global response, the theme recognises that the scientific knowledge and tools to prevent new infections and prolong life among those living with HIV/AIDS already exist, even in the poorest settings. The challenge at hand is to garner the resources and the collective will to translate that knowledge and experience into broadly available HIV treatment and prevention programs.

The International AIDS Conference exists for exactly these reasons. It is one of the most important gatherings for the release and discussion of key scientific developments in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

AIDS 2006 will bring together the movement of people responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic to share their lessons and together stake out the road ahead. In doing this, the Conference directly affects the lives of those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. AIDS 2006 is a catalyst for change.
