Street Party Friday, October 21, 2011 @ 7 - 11 pm

On Display from October 18th-30th

Dundas St W. West of Keele St.

Designers and artists let loose on the Junction shop windows.

Two designers found themselves wandering about Dundas West in the Junction. On that particular day, many of the retail shops were closed which left them clutching the glass of their spacious shop windows gawking at the merchandise from the sidewalks.

This turn of events led Toronto-based design firm Mason to host Show Off @ the Junction; an event where local designers and artists are let loose on these awe-inspiring glass boxes to create jaw-dropping installations which showcase the amazing retailers and product the community has to offer.

The event, which includes 12 retail shops and art galleries on the strip of Dundas St. W, west of Keele, unites over 20 design-professionals providing an opportunity to create conceptual spaces all the while supporting independent business owners and their unique product.

The art galleries, eclectic home furnishing and fashion retail shops that have cropped-up in this neighbourhood are not the only unique feature of this area; the sense of community and pride that residents and shop owners have for their neighbourhood is what makes the Junction the perfect location for Mason to host the first, of what is expected to become an annual event which will take place in different neighbourhoods around town.

Along with the parade of window installations which will be on display from October 18th - 30th the city can look forward to a Street Party on October 21st. Shops and galleries will keep their doors open until 11 pm with unique offerings in support of the event. Owners will be on hand to chat about their unique goods alongside the artists and designers who will reveal the secrets and stories behind their installations.

In 1971 a young girl began writing her own songs. She was 15 years old. Her guitar was young and so were her poems. Three years later, her friends knew her as an 18-http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifyear-old poetess with a guitar, a miniature “bard”. On the way to a birthday party, she got off at a Moscow metro to write a song and give it as a present for her friend. She did not know that 25 years later she would be singing that song to thousands of people....

TORONTO, Oct. 4, 2011 /CNW/ - Each year, an independent international jury, consisting of nineteen members, judges the entries in nine different categories, submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all corners of the world. The provenance of Sakha (Yakut) people of Siberia, Russia is still much of a mystery. Their language belongs to the Turkic group. Their origin is still a much debated subject among historians and archeologists. Yet, much of Sakha cultural background is referred to Olonkho, the oldest epic arts of the Turkic-Mongolian peoples, proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

This event will consist of two parts.
First part (Sept 30-Oct 9) will feature original artwork of Mikhail Starostin, Andrey Chikachev, Tujara Markova, Valeriy Bessonov, O.A. Rakhleeva, A.G. Petrov. As well, a burgeoning photographic talent, Evgenia Arbugaeva, will present her newest collection - vivid depictions of Siberian life - showing why she has received awards in Moscow, Paris and New York.
Reception: Oct 1st, 5-8pm. Wine and cheese. Free Admission.

During the second part (October 15 – 30) Torontonians will also be able to take a bigger glimpse of the unique culture and ancient philosophy of Sakha people through contemporary pieces of visual, musical, vocal and culinary art. For the very first time in Canada, the audience will be able to listen to improvisations of Claudia and Herman Khatylaevs performing on more than 15 traditional musical instruments, enjoy one-of-a-kind fashion show of custom made beadwork dresses by designer Avgustina Filippova, - each dress takes up to 2 months of work if sewn by 20 seamstresses, savor traditional Sakha delicacies created by chef Innokentyj Tarbakhov.
