As part of the 2019 Retrospective, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new book "Persephone's Eden: A Celebration of the Life and Works of Michael Reeves”. The book is a visual delight showcasing many of Michel's well-known works as well as previously unseen early paintings. The book is punctuated by a series of essays contributed by Michael's family, friends, colleagues, collectors and critics, detailing his life from his early days and studies as a student at the Bath Academy of Art, through his career as an antiques dealer in London and Toronto, to his transition into full time painting and the eventual restoration of his Port Perry studio and property following his death.
Michael Reeves is arguably one of the last Neo-Romantic painters of his generation. His peers and mentors have been Directors and Trustees of the Tate and National Galleries in England. In 2005, Joan Murray considered his works a "triumph of individualism". The book title, "Persephone's Eden" is named after the land where he and his wife Norma found their place in paradise on Lake Scugog in 1984, the works Michael produced there are the product of his dream come true.
Through this book, we hope to create a deep understanding and appreciation for Michael and his extraordinary works and to shed light onto his contribution to the world of international and Canadian art.
Along with a selection of paintings from his most prolific phase during the late 1980's to early 2000's in Port Perry, the Retrospective in 2019 is the first time any of Michael's 1950's works have ever been shown.

The book launch will be held at the Latitude 44 Gallery in Toronto on May 16th from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

On the occasion of her solo exhibition We of the Middling Sort, Lili Huston-Herterich will speak with independent curator, writer and textile historian Erin Alexa Freedman on the various threads of inquiry lining this project.

Lili Huston-Herterich is a Toronto-based artist with a background in photography and a practice currently rooted in multidisciplinary installation. The artist routinely employs anti-hierarchical methods of art-making; integrating craft practices, staging participatory events, and using utilitarian objects to engage bodies that share the same space. Recent exhibition include Babble On at Rockaway Topless, NY (2016), Soft Rug & A Chirping Bird at AC Repair Co., Toronto (2016), The Mouth that Holds the Tongue at The Power Plant, Toronto (2015), and Several Swallowing Egg Sounds at Peregrine Program, Chicago (2015). She is currently working on a digital archive project Chroma Lives with design historian Erin Alexa Freedman that was previously supported as a Performance-In-Residence with Amsterdam-based organization If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution (2015-2016), as well as the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts (2016).

Erin Alexa Freedman (b. Toronto, Ontario) is an independent curator and writer living and working in New York. A recent MA graduate of the Bard Graduate Center, her interest in global textile histories is characterized by a commitment to issues of process, materiality, intercultural exchange, and sustainability. In 2016, she co-curated Chroma Lives with Lili Huston-Herterich, a durational archival performance and exhibition profiling Toronto’s cross-disciplinary art community of the 1980s through oral history. Currently, she is helping prepare Migrant Bauhaus, an international project marking the school’s centenary, which examines the school’s post-war international dissemination and reception. 

The exhibition We of the Middling Sort is currently on view and continues until March 25th.

In the late nineteenth century, the Junction was home to one of Toronto’s most bustling manufacturing communities. Branded the Junction after the trisecting railway lines that enclosed its easternmost enclave, its residential interior was shielded from the outside by rows of industrial facilities turning out sundries from pianos to soap. New business interests came and went, all recklessly polluting the neighbourhood for years, leaching chemicals into its soil and clouding its skies in inky threads of unburned carbon. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the Junction’s residents finally convinced the city to address the litany of public health concerns that had plagued the community throughout a century of heedless waste disposal. The once lauded, though increasing isolated, epicenter of the city’s consumer goods production had quite literally become fortressed in its own rubbish.

For We of the Middling Sort, Lili Huston-Herterich has collected the valueless cutaways of a local upholsterer and the unwanted clothing donated by its residents as the raw material for her work. Some of these garments, stretched taut or disassembled, are documented in photograms—cameraless images made by exposing a photosensitive surface to light. The prints capture light passing through garment openings and gossamer-thin surfaces, revealing spectral portraits of wear and the murky threshold between flesh and fabric.

For Huston-Herterich, this space between is less about marking boundaries or suggesting exit strategies than revealing a place (and moment) for potential contact. The x-ray logic of the photogram, which turns opaque objects into silhouettes and unobstructed space into darkness, is echoed in a series of ceramic casts attached to clothing assemblages that hang between the framed prints. While these handfuls of clay appear fragile, each one uniquely textured by the lost-and-found glove used to mould it, they are anything but. As casts of the dimpled spaces left by clenched fists, they more readily recall hands raised together in resistance. Were these hands attached to arms once clothed in the shirtsleeves thronged together and quilted to the curtain of upholstery ends on the gallery’s back wall? Like relics of refusal, these works trace the community's enduring opposition to demise, even if those traces are now barely recognizable.

Special Request to Junction Community Residents

Zalucky Contemporary, a local contemporary art gallery, is currently collecting donations of unused and over-worn clothing that will be used in an upcoming exhibition in February 2017 by Toronto-based artist Lili Huston-Herterich.

"I am interested in producing 'quilted portraits' of the Junction community through recycled textile materials that are no longer useable. So really, clothes that have been loved and worn to the point of rags - holey socks, stained shirts, ripped or torn garments, or otherwise are all fair game!

The final works will be photographic, and I will be acknowledging the support of all participating clothing donators (upon permission)."

Donations can be made directly to the gallery, through the front door mail-slot. Please make sure to leave your name and contact details if you would like to receive public credit.

Function in the Junction #5 — Sat., March 29

JRA’s Function in the Junction #5 is coming up — evening of March 29, 2014, at the Masonic Temple, 151 Annette Street. 

This annual event centers on food, drinks, music, silent and noisy auctions, and socializing with neighbours. 

This year we will be raising funds for FutureWatch, a not-for-profit registered charitable organization, and their youth group Y-ECO Youth Environmental Community. 

Posters for Function in The Junction are appearing in Dundas St. shop windows, and tickets ($50 including dinner provided by local restaurants) are on sale at Agora Cafe and at Latitude 44. 

Dinner and silent auction begin at 6 pm, and the after-dinner events start at 8: live auction, raffles, and cash bar, with live music from 9 pm. Those who come after dinner pay just $5 at the door.

Appetizer:
Salad
Ontario apple, walnut, endive and arugula salad, with honey vinegrette

Entree:
Individual Moroccan Pie
Butternut squash, marinated in a medley of spices and roasted cranberries, shallots, pistachios, almonds and spinach, layered with Agora hummus, enveloped in layers of phyllo pastry and baked to perfection.
Served with yogurt dressing.

When Art Meets Science: Broadening Horizons through Interdisciplinary Practice – A Discussion

Ian Clarke, BSc, PhD, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences/ School of Interdisciplinary Studies, OCAD University

Science and art often have a perceived divide in contemporary culture, yet historically their roots stem from similar manifestations of creativity and aesthetics, in exploring, responding to and explaining Nature. This panel presentation brings together scientists, artists and those with a foot in each of the ‘two cultures’ to discuss their interdisciplinary practices, and encourage novel ways to understand the world around us.

Robin Kingsburgh will discuss the teaching of science to art and design students, and the value of incorporating art making into the teaching of science. Creatively rendering a scientific idea facilitates understanding, and provides an alternate way for an artist to learn about science. This science/art making practice deepens students’ understanding of the topic at hand, as the choice of how to render an idea visually greatly clarifies thought, and encourages abstract and metaphorical thinking. Art created can be displayed to the community, and provide a bridge into scientific concepts for the general public. Robin will show recent work from her students at OCAD University.

Stephen Morris works in experimental non-linear physics, and will discuss self-organized, emergent patterns and textures. These shapes emerge spontaneously from a dynamic process of growing, folding, cracking, wrinkling, branching, flowing and other kinds of morphological development. His work is informed by the scientific aesthetic of nonlinear physics. Stephen’s stunning visual images draw upon both laboratory physics experiments and Nature; his work celebrates the subtle interplay of order and complexity in emergent patterns.

Lisa Carrie Goldberg is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her artwork often takes the form of full-sensory installations that examine the realm of art and science, including topics in sleep science, tissue culture, physiology and molecular biology. Lisa will discuss her recent work as Director of Action Potential Lab, Toronto’s first laboratory dedicated to merging science and art. Based on a collaborative learning-teaching model, Action Potential Lab provides opportunities for children and adults to experience true interdisciplinarity, engaging in creative projects designed to merge art and science, and encourage novel ways of understanding the world around us.

Ian Clarke will guide the panellists through a moderated discussion, which touches upon issues of commonality and difference in art and science, including: the creative process; the role of aesthetics; the importance of interdisciplinarity; and the role or visualization in art and science.

*Robin Kingsburgh and Stephen Morris are curatorial team members for “Occam’s Razor: Art, Science & Aesthetics”, a juried exhibition of works of art inspired by science, examining similarities in practice amongst scientists and artists, at Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts (April 2-20, 2014), and the !dea Gallery, Ontario Science Centre (May 3- June 1, 2014).

The Junction Music Festival 2013

The Junction BIA is pleased to  announced the lineup and details for their 2nd annual Junction Music Festival, happening September 21st on outdoor stages and in businesses across the Junction neighbourhood anchored by Dundas St. West and Keele Streets.

Headliners include classic rock revivalists Zeus, alt-country heroes Cuff the Duke, klezmer-punks Lemon Bucket Orkestra, and Canadian/South African R&B singer Zaki Ibrahim, whose recent album Every Opposite is short-listed for the coveted Polaris Music Prize, awarded to the Canadian album “of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history.”  Ibrahim finds out if she’s won the $30,000 prize only 2 days after the festival.

The event features music on 5 outdoor stages, 20+ venues, both traditional music stops and participating local businesses, from café’s to bookstores, all hosting music acts throughout the day.

The bill features artists an eclectic mix of genres, from funk to punk to jazz and latin, focusing largely on Junction-area talent, and interweaving other artists who have unique connections to the neighbourhood.

“My dad was born and raised in the Junction on Clendenan Avenue, so we have a long family history with this area of Toronto“ says Cuff The Duke’s Wayne Petti. All of the artists’ unique Junction-area stories are available on the festival website.

In addition to performances, there will be music workshops and other programming, and local businesses are taking the opportunity to present music-related offerings on the day, including music-inspired menus from local eateries, and more.

The event is completely free and is an all day event.  The outdoor programming is all-ages, while the venue programming may be subject to 19+ licensing, depending on venue.
