Born Believers: Old Believers in Buryatia

Natalia went to the International Festival of Old Believers "The Avvakum's Path" in Buryatia as a guest from Canada.

All photographs were taken by a long-gone HP digital camera and they are not an artistic statement but an attempt to show an ordinary and still exotic in everyday life of Southern Siberia.

The Republic of Buryatia has a big population of descendants of the Old Believers who moved there in XVIII century seeking religious freedom. Another name of this people — Semeyskie or Family People — was given because they moved to Siberia with their big families.

The Semeyskie still practised ancient Orthodox rituals and perpetuate everyday activities. They are also characterized by their traditional dress, handicrafts, dwellings, paintings, ornaments and food as well as their music. Also noteworthy are their polyphonic choirs, which perform traditional songs at family celebrations and popular festivals.

Many visitors come to Buryatia only for the tour to the Old Believers, to see their way of life, as if leapt from the pages of a history book. The old schism is waned but the culture still lives.

CANADIAN JUNCTION: Town, City and Country by Neil Ross

Join Eileen Brown, Mikaela Cordero and Neil Ross for a reading of a new one-act play about the Junction experience and the birth of Canada. A diverse village and town becomes a city and joins Toronto as an equal (in its heart).

Featuring, from the Junction's past:  Nursing student Anne Leun who broke the colour barrier at a downtown Toronto theatre. Merchant and philanthropist Mrs. Brown – who introduced the telephone to the Junction. Journalist A.B. Rice – for sixty years the Junction was his beat.

Also a special guest interview with two-time Governor General Christopher Moore on 1867: How the Fathers Made a Deal.

Canadian Junction is a Canada 150 project of the West Toronto Junction Historical Society.

A Call for Donations: In Producing 'Quilted Portraits' of the Junction Community

Special Request to Junction Community Residents

Zalucky Contemporary, a local contemporary art gallery, is currently collecting donations of unused and over-worn clothing that will be used in an upcoming exhibition in February 2017 by Toronto-based artist Lili Huston-Herterich.

"I am interested in producing 'quilted portraits' of the Junction community through recycled textile materials that are no longer useable. So really, clothes that have been loved and worn to the point of rags - holey socks, stained shirts, ripped or torn garments, or otherwise are all fair game!

The final works will be photographic, and I will be acknowledging the support of all participating clothing donators (upon permission)."

Donations can be made directly to the gallery, through the front door mail-slot. Please make sure to leave your name and contact details if you would like to receive public credit.

Fading History Vol. 2, has 11 chapters covering a wide range of stories of historical interest.

The first chapter looks at the Grand Duchess of Russia’s life in Canada, including the years she lived on Camilla Road in Cooksville. When she first arrived in Canada, she settled on a farm in Campbellville and in an amazing coincidence that brought two European families of note together in a remote farming community in Canada, she sold her Campbellville farm to Wolfgang Von Richthofen, the cousin of WWI German flying ace, the Red Baron. (And that’s just the first chapter!)

The fundraising event is not unlike those the WTJHS has hosted in the past. Junction “legends,” such as journalist A.B. Rice, first librarian Elizabeth MacCallum, chief coroner Dr. G.W. Clendenan, chief of police and first Mountie Josiah Royce and Rev T.E.E. Shore have made appearances at such events as 'The Wild Wild Junction' Ghost stories pub crawl.

Tall Tales of the Junction will be “like a pub crawl without the crawl,” said Ross, “because it’s winter.”

The Junction legends will again share their favourite stories while audience members will also be invited to share their own stories of the neighbourhood for a chance to win historical prizes.

The $20 admission fee will help the WTJHS continue to do its work, like advocating for the conservation of the neighbourhood’s built heritage. The event will include a presentation based on the most recent installment of the WTJHS’ graphic novel.

Admission includes snacks and a pint of ale from a Junction Craft Brewery special cask.

Tickets are available at Annette Street Library, 145 Annette St.

A message from the Junction Residents' Association:

Function in the Junction #5 — Sat., March 29

JRA’s Function in the Junction #5 is coming up — evening of March 29, 2014, at the Masonic Temple, 151 Annette Street. 

This annual event centers on food, drinks, music, silent and noisy auctions, and socializing with neighbours. 

This year we will be raising funds for FutureWatch, a not-for-profit registered charitable organization, and their youth group Y-ECO Youth Environmental Community. 

Posters for Function in The Junction are appearing in Dundas St. shop windows, and tickets ($50 including dinner provided by local restaurants) are on sale at Agora Cafe and at Latitude 44. 

Dinner and silent auction begin at 6 pm, and the after-dinner events start at 8: live auction, raffles, and cash bar, with live music from 9 pm. Those who come after dinner pay just $5 at the door.

Agora Cafe #1:
Appetizer:
Salad
Ontario apple, walnut, endive and arugula salad, with honey vinegrette

Entree:
Individual Moroccan Pie
Butternut squash, marinated in a medley of spices and roasted cranberries, shallots, pistachios, almonds and spinach, layered with Agora hummus, enveloped in layers of phyllo pastry and baked to perfection.
Served with yogurt dressing.

Agora Cafe #2:
Appetizer:
Salad
Ontario apple, walnut, endive and arugula salad, with honey vinegrette

Entree:
Chickpea and Roasted Vegetable Tagine
A selection of seasonal vegetables and chikpeas slow cooked in a medley of spices on a bed of organic brown rice (gluten free).

North of Bombay #1
Appetizer:
Onion Bhaji
Chopped onions, green peppers and spices mixed with chick pea flour.

Entree:
Butter Chicken
Marinated chicken breast cooked in a fresh tomato sauce with herbs and cream
Served with:
Aloo gobi – cauliflower (gob(h)i) and potatoes (aloo) cooked with tomato, onion, herbs and spices.
Rice pulao - saffron basmati rice with vegetables.
Nan - unleavened bread made with white flour.
Mango chutney and lime pickle.

North of Bombay #2
Appetizer:
Onion Bhaji

Homemade cottage cheese cubes cooked in a fresh tomato sauce with herbs and cream
