Join Eileen Brown, Mikaela Cordero and Neil Ross for a reading of a new one-act play about the Junction experience and the birth of Canada. A diverse village and town becomes a city and joins Toronto as an equal (in its heart).

Featuring, from the Junction's past:  Nursing student Anne Leun who broke the colour barrier at a downtown Toronto theatre. Merchant and philanthropist Mrs. Brown – who introduced the telephone to the Junction. Journalist A.B. Rice – for sixty years the Junction was his beat.

Also a special guest interview with two-time Governor General Christopher Moore on 1867: How the Fathers Made a Deal.

Canadian Junction is a Canada 150 project of the West Toronto Junction Historical Society.

• Pumpkin Carving for kids at the Junction Train Station between 10am and 1pm
• Scary movies for the family at the Junction Train Station between 6:30pm and 8:30pm

Come join in the fun! We will have a pumpkin drawing and pumpkin carving for everyone. Kids 1 to 4 years old can decorate pumpkins (with parental assistance), while kids 5 to 12-years-old can carve their own pumpkins. All the necessary materials are provided free of charge.

And the pre-Halloween festivities don’t end there! The evening will see a selection of family-friendly classic spooky movies (not too scary) projected at the Junction Train Station. Seating, hot chocolate and treats will be provided – and it’s all free of charge. Dress warmly!

The concert tomorrow, July 19, will feature a Latin and Andean music. The Imbayakunas band comes to the Junction City. Their music allows the listener to escape on an exotic voyage to a South American traditional Native community.

"The Imbayakunas" - Keeping Andean Traditions Alive Through Song
"When I made the decision to form ‘The Imbayakunas’ music group, I knew my ancestors would be proud", remarks Patricio Chiza. Mr. Chiza is the musical director and founder of The Imbayakunas Music Group from Ecuador. "I come from a strong and vibrant Native Andean culture. Both my mother and father raised myself and my siblings to understand and appreciate our traditions. Although there was and still exists racism against Native people, my parents never relinquished their pride and dignity in the face of adversity and discrimination."
In 1998, Patricio Chiza began his dream of forming a music group that would highlight the wondrous sound of the Andes. Each musician is from Ecuador and shares a love of performing. Their music continues to evolve and can be described as a World Music fusion between traditional Andean sounds and contemporary Latin rhythms. The music of The Imbayakunas is infectious; Latin American and North American audiences alike are drawn to the musical mix of pan flutes, guitar, violin, charango and drums.
The Imbayakunas Music Group has worked hard to make their mark as entertainers. They have gained much notoriety while performing at various festivals, private functions, shopping centres and benefit events. Through their work over the years, they have become the best known local presenters of Andean music in Canada. The Imbayakunas have recorded and released 10 CD's to date and showcase a wide repertoire of musical sounds spanning from traditional Andean San Juans to cover versions of classics such as "Hotel California" by The Eagles.
"Anytime I have the opportunity to show the world the beauty that is Andean Music, it is a privilege and my pleasure", says Patricio Chiza. The Imbayakunas success is a dream come true.

CENTENNIAL WALKING TOURS OF "JUNCTION CITY":
SATURDAYS, FROM JUNE 21 TO AUGUST 2, 2008

Walk the streets of the Junction
with the men and women who built it

Toronto, ON, June 18, 2008 – The Junction Forum for Art and Culture, in association with the West Toronto Junction Historical Society, present free 'Centennial Walking Tours of "Junction City"', which will take place every Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from June 21 to August 2, 2008 at the "Junction City" square at 2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue.

Each Saturday, after the noon 'Summer Concerts in the Junction', meet Legends of the Junction at the "Junction City" train platform in "Junction City" square, and join them in a factual fun-filled series of walks through history.

WTJHS Centennial Committee Chair Neil Ross explains, "For the month of June, we will investigate the seamier side of Junction life, north of the railway tracks. Each tour will provide approximately an hour and half of entertainment, and in July we’ll be exploring Indian Road."

Excerpt from the June walk:

"In Carlton-Davenport, two families held the balance between vice and virtue. On this corner: the Heydons of Heydon House; their red brick frontier palace the site of a battle between workers at Canadian Pacific and the Union Stockyards. The brawl, started over a prostitute, launched local prohibition and brought 10,000 into the Junction for “last call.” On the opposite corner: the Bulls of Tipperary; fervent Methodists who carved a village from the wilderness. And in the middle, brilliant reformer Dr. John Taylor Gilmour, who brought Carlton-Davenport into the Junction, and laid the foundation for an independent city."

Legends of the Junction journalist A. B. Rice (1858-1950), editor of J. T. Gilmour’s weekly York Tribune, leads the tours and contributes many personal anecdotes. Joining Mr. Rice (played by Neil Ross) will be more Legends of the Junction including, Mayor G. W. Clendenan, Principal Mary Cherry, pioneering librarian Elizabeth McCallum and others.

West Toronto Junction City Presents Free Summer Concerts and Family Fun

2008 will be the first summer that the Junction Forum for Art and Culture will present the Live Summer Concert Series in the Junction.

Every Saturday from June 14 to August 2, 2008 the Junction Train Platform in the West Toronto Junction City Square, 2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue will be alive with entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy.

From 10 am local businesses will gather in the Junction organic farmers' market, where you can also get a circus lesson from Toronto Aerial Dance Theatre, have a photo taken in period costume, contribute a story to [murmur], take a walking tour presented by the West Toronto Junction Historical Society( at 1:30 pm), and more.

All of this will be centred around the noon free concerts representing the wide range of cultures making up the Junction including; Maltese, Jamaican, Kenyan, Mexican, Peruvian, Spanish, Celtic and North American.

Students from the Academy of Realist Art have completed an historic-themed mural on the left side of the platform area the last few weeks as well - sand some landscaping has been added to the area to green-it-up.

So come up to the Junction for brunch, then head over to the Junction Train Platform to see what's going on.

• June 14 concert will feature Donné Roberts
Juno award winner and Urban Music award nominated Canada’s Afro-cosmopolitan artist

If the immortal sounds of Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel and Richie Havens were to come together as one, their torchbearer might very well be Madagascar-born, Russian-raised and now Toronto-based guitarist Donné Roberts. Effortlessly combining poly-rhythmic African and European folk & groove and blazing North American funk, rock and blues influences, Roberts and his 6-piece band deliver a remarkably diverse, infectiously joyful and utterly unique live music experience.

• June 21 concert will feature Pagan Jam
Celebrate the Solstice

Join us for an hour of Pagan music and chants as we pay tribute to the Solstice with a group of local Toronto and Junction musicians brought together by local recording engineer Chris Hall. This will be followed at night by the Junction Community in Bloom Summer Solstice Lantern Tour of the area celebrating the Junction's mix of grit and community and reminding us of Earth Hour's conservation message.

• June 28 concert will feature Malta Band Club
30 Piece Band

The Malta Band Club was founded by a group of dedicated Maltese musicians who mostly lived on Dundas Street and the surrounding area. The club had its beginnings in the late 1960's as a marching band organized by the Maltese Canadian Society of Toronto. In 1971, the band members decided to branch out on their own and formed the now popular and successful Malta Band Club, Inc.

Following Summer Concerts in the Junction at the Pacific Station (Just east of the North East Corner of Pacific and Dundas) WTJHS Historical Walking Tours led by historical characters. The first three tours, June 14, 21, 28 will visit the Carlton Davenport district north east of the station. This working class neighbourhood predates the rest of the Junction as the villages of Carleton and Davenport. Learn of the wondrous healer who lived on Vine Avenue, experience the tragedy of nine Junction young men who died in the Humber Bay, meet Bartholomew Bull and the enterprising Bulls of Tipperary.
Host: A.B. Rice with special guests. Wear sensible shoes.

The free neighbourhood walking tour starts at the northwest corner of Runnymede Road and Dundas Street West and finishes at Keele Street, south of Dundas Street West. This exciting walk with a local guide, Madeleine McDowell is organized by the West Toronto Junction Historical Society. Discover the history, heritage and culture of the "Junction City" celebrating this year the Centennial of the City of West Toronto.

West Toronto Junction

A centre of industry and commerce linked to the Dundas Highway and the junction of several railway lines, this prosperous little town voted to ban the sale of alcohol in 1904. Find out why - and hear other stories of The Junction, including the amalgamation of the cities of “West Toronto” and “Toronto” in 1909.

This is the 14th year that Heritage Toronto has been conducting free guided neighbourhood tours. The walks are being held on weekends until October 5 and West Toronto is the 10th in this series for 2008.
