Description

Little known composer Julius Reubke was Liszt’s favourite pupil in Weimar, where he composed the Piano Sonata in B flat minor - profoundly influenced by the Lisztian model - and the Organ Sonata on the 94th Psalm in C minor, which is believed to be one of the greatest organ works in the classical repertoire.

This unique and never before played double bill in Toronto showcases Reubke’s two most famous sonatas, performed by Imre Olah on organ and Anastasia Rizikov on piano.

Dying at the age of 24 and leaving only a handful of compositions and the heartfelt testimonials of teachers and friends, Julius Reubke represents one of the most intriguing might-have-beens of the Romantic era in Germany.

Liszt’s words, in a letter of condolence to Reubke’s father, are often quoted: ‘Truly no one could feel more deeply the loss which Art has suffered in your Julius, than the one who has followed with admiring sympathy his noble, constant and successful strivings in these latter years, and who will ever remain true to the memory of his friendship.’

Imre Oláh: Music Director, Conductor, and Organist

Imre Oláh was born in Hungary.  He studied music in Budapest, specializing in organ performance.  Later, his studies involved specialization in choral music, and choral direction.

Ever since he moved to Canada in 1989, Imre has served as music director, and organist in several churches.  He has been part of the musical life of the city, presenting organ recitals, and accompanying choirs, and soloists.

He also performed organ recitals in Hungary, Germany, Italy, and in the USA.  He holds the Associateship Diploma with the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

Imre is the Artistic Director of the Scola Cantorum Choir, and organist of the Stratford Concert Choir.  He is also the Music Director, and organist of the Caven Presbyterian Church, in Bolton.

Anastasia Rizikov: Canadian Classical Pianist

Anastasia Rizikov, a young Canadian pianist was born in Toronto, Ontario. She began her studies at age of five, and since then showed unparalleled dedication to both practice and performance. Since 2004, she studies with award-winning piano teacher Maia Spis at the Nadia Music Academy in Toronto. In 2017-2019 she studied with Rena Shereshevskaya and Marian Rybicki at École Normale de Musique de Paris (Paris, France, 2019) where she received her Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste. Ms. Rizikov also has played in master classes for Sergei Babayan, Vladimir Feltsman, Awadagin Pratt, Arie Vardi, Robert Levin, Ferenc Rados, Anatoly Ryabov, Oxana Yablonskaya, and has worked with András Schiff, Emanuel Ax, Menahem Pressler, Gabor Takács-Nagy, and Olga Kern.

Anastasia Rizikov has dazzled the international arena as a child prodigy since she was seven, competing with musicians over twice her age, and winning numerous International piano competitions, placing first in the following: Ettore Pozzoli International Piano Competition, (Italy, 2015); the Jaén International Piano Competition, (Spain, 2015); the 13th «Giuliano Pecar» International Prize for Piano Interpretation Competition (Italy, 2013); and the Rotary International Piano Competition (Spain, 2011), among many others. She won first place at American Protégé 2010 International Piano and Strings Competition and performed in New York City's Carnegie Hall. In 2012 Anastasia was awarded the prestigious 2013 "Debut Atlantic" concert tour, a 2,5 weeks long tour along the Canadian Atlantic coast that was held in September, 2013.

In fall, 2019 Anastasia had a 2-week concert tour in the Northern Canadian provinces, organised by Piano Six, which was founded by Janina Fialkowska - the group of six Canadian pianists that A. Rizikov had joined in 2018.

Ivana Popovic released the album "Bushes And Bombshelters" on digital platforms and on the CD, for the promotional house "Long Play".

The album recently announced the single and video "Gypsy Me" and the promotion "Bushes And Bombshelters" begins on February 10th with a concert at Gallery 345 in Toronto.

Bushes and Bombshelters is a debut album by Serbian - Canadian composer and violinist Ivana Popovic.

Built on the strong classical foundation and aesthetic, her music is also influenced by Gypsy and Eastern European Folk styles. Ivana's compositions are intimate, cinematic stories about land and journeys, friendship, love, memory and crossroads. Although mostly instrumental, each piece is built around a specific event, image, or emotion. In its multicultural bent, this album speaks to Canadian immigrant communities from around the world, responding to common themes such as starting a new life while longing for home.

About This Event:
Canadian debut of the
XV International Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medalist,
Pianist Dmitry Masleev

“Musicality of metaphysical proportions” – Neue Musikzeitung
“Virtuoso brilliance” – Financial Times

Last season, Show One brought Toronto the first and only joint appearance by Lukas Geniusas and Lucas Debargue, whose prize-winning performances were the talk of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition.

Now the Gold Medalist makes his Canadian debut!

Siberian-born Dmitry Masleev has excited music lovers in his homeland, in Europe’s capitals, and in New York, Seoul and Beijing. With Maestros Valery Gergiev and Yury Bashmet, he twice toured Japan in his first touring season.

In January, he makes his highly anticipated debut at Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium, in a year that includes a German tour with the National Philharmonic of Russia under Maestro Vladimir Spivakov, an Asian tour with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Mikko Franck, and many recitals and orchestral appearances.

Critics rave about his impeccable technique, sense of form, brilliance, lyricism, and spontaneity of style.
In Toronto, he demonstrates his range and sensitivity in Scarlatti sonatas, Beethoven’s Les adieux, Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 2, Rachmaninov preludes and etudes-tableaux, and, to cap things off, Liszt’s pyrotechnic Totentanz.

Experience the world’s next piano legend in his first Canadian appearance!

About Imnarja:
The Feast of St Peter and St Paul, better known as Mnarja. Mnarja, or l-Imnarja (pronounced lim-nar-ya) is one of the most important dates on the Maltese cultural calendar.  The word L'Imnarja (L-Imnarja) comes from the word luminarja (meaning "illumination"), which in turn is derived from the Latin word Luminare - to light up. The people manifest this by lighting bonfires and candles. This day is a public holiday in Malta and Gozo.
