It’s noon and -37C on Chukotka peninsula. A blistering wind slices across the tundra. In the magnificent landscape of Russia’s Arctic Circle, just across the Bering Strait from Alaska, 72-year-old patriarch Vukvukai leads his Indigenous Chukchi family in caring for their herd of 14,000 reindeer. Living in isolation except for their wind-up two-way radio and occasional visits from traders in tank-like snow vehicles, the family depends on their reindeer for food, shelter and clothing. Through the seasons, unflagging Vukvukai alternates between chuckling and barking orders at his sons and grandchildren, instilling in them the practical knowledge and spiritual traditions that have allowed the Chuckchi to survive for thousands of years in one of the harshest environments in the world. Subtly directed by Aleksei Vakrushev, an award-winning Inuk filmmaker from Chukotka, The Tundra Book provides a rare and stunning glimpse into a world still intertwined with the oldest rhythms of life.

72 years have passed as deer herder Vukvukai lives in the depths of Chukotka. He is an old man full of energy and wisdom -- The Real Man of Tundra whose life can not be seen apart from the deer.
His people take care of a huge herd -- over 14,000 deer. Their life is a non-stop struggle for survival and well-being in the most harsh weather conditions of Chaun-Chukotka. They deeply believe in the strength of tradition and so succeed in their struggle. The ancient culture of Nomadic Chukchi takes care of them, so they preserve and follow it. As far as it is now -- their realm remains stable. This is the Truth of Vukvukai.

When the USSR broke apart in 1991, a generation of young people faced a new realm of possibilities. An intimate epic about the extraordinary lives of this last Soviet generation, Robin Hessman’s feature documentary debut tells the stories of five Moscow schoolmates who were brought up behind the Iron Curtain, witnessed the joy and confusion of glasnost, and reached adulthood right as the world changed around them. Through candid first-person testimony, revealing verité footage, and vintage home movies, Hessman, who spent many years living in Moscow, reveals a Russia rarely ever seen on film, where people are frank about their lives and forthcoming about their country. Engaging, funny, and positively inspiring, in My Perestroika politics is personal, honesty overshadows ideology, and history progresses one day, one life at a time.

At the center of the film is the Meyerson family.

Borya and Lyuba are married and have a son, Mark. They are both history teachers at Moscow’s School #57. As we are drawn into the fabric of their everyday lives, we hear stories of two very different Soviet childhoods: Lyuba was a conformist who would salute the TV when the Soviet hymn played, while Borya preferred to subvert the system whenever possible.

Their childhood classmates provide their own perspectives.

"A Classic Evening under the Stars" with "Silver Screen Classics"

Toronto, ON, August 25, 2008 – The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural multi-arts extravaganza like no other and the free outdoor Movieola Movie Night, taking place on Thursday, September 4 (7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.), is an all new feature of the 2008 celebration.

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the Junction Arts Festival, which practices and encourages reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire festival location, is set to throw the party of the year as the Junction celebrates its centennial of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908.

The 2008 Junction Arts Festival proudly showcases Movieola Movie Night, sponsored by Channel Zero Inc. (broadcaster for Movieola – The Short Film Channel and Silver Screen Classics), in the Junction City Square (2960 Dundas Street West and Pacific Avenue), where movie goers can sit under the stars and watch three hours of the brightest of Hollywood's actors in classic black and white short films from the golden era of movie making.

States Junction Arts Festival Executive Director Michael Menegon, "We're excited to welcome Channel Zero Inc.'s Silver Screen Classics to their new home office in the Junction (on Dundas Street West) and to the celebration this year. Even though film has always been a part of the festival, we hope that this is the beginning of a new tradition together."

For one night only, viewers will see shorts featuring slapstick comedy greats including The Three Stooges, Keystone Cops, Buster Keaton, Our Gang, Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, and children can participate in hand-painting on the "Silver Screen Classics Wall of Fame" as well as meet up with King Kong and the Marx Brothers characters.

Screenparty: You’re Invited!

I was pretty excited to read an invitation from Vladimir Milman to the “Screenparty," a cast and crew screening hosted by Cameron Bailey. It will be this Sunday, March 18th 2007.

“If you look closely you might recognize somebody in the first picture... Yes, true, that's me,”- wrote Vladimir.

Our congratulations to him for another big achievement. We have a proverb in Russia that says: a talented person is talented in everything. I believe it is about Vladimir.
It will be superb to go and get a sneak view of this event just in between the Russian Poetry Club’s and the Toronto Oblomov Society’s meetings.

Four short films will screen: Rock Garden: A Love Story, Last Year at Killaloe, Tell Us the Truth About Josephine, and Babysitting Andy. 7:36pm, free admission.

Innis Townhall is located within Innis College on the University of Toronto's downtown campus, at the NW corner of St. George Street and Sussex Avenue, just south of Bloor Street. It is a five minute walk from the nearest subway stop, St. George Station.

It is the same place where was a screening of "Our Motherland" by with Vitaly Mansky and a discussion with him after the film.
