What a great opportunity to watch documentary films about Russia along with the following discussions with the film director.

The Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies of the University of Toronto presents films by and discussion with one of Russia's best documentary filmmakers, Vitaly Mansky.

Description: Anti-Semitism at the hands of the Soviet Union state made many families in the 1970s emigrate to Israel. Filmmaker Vitaly Mansky heads to Israel, USA, Canada and Ukraine in search of those he once knew so well, for their mutual past and for discussions about dreams and disappointments, discrimination and dominance, homeland and happiness.

«Our Motherland» tells the story of the director's trip in search of his classmates from school #52 in Lvov with whom he studied in Soviet times. It is made up of 33 short novellas about 33 classmates of the author. Only a few of them still live in Lvov today. The rest are scattered throughout the world. What can unite the former pioneers of the «Gagarin» group? What does «motherland » mean to them today, the motherland to which they swore loyalty in the spring of 1973 when they joined the ranks of the pioneers?
