Russian Theme at the Planet in Focus Festival

The eighth annual Planet in Focus film festival is coming up in Toronto, and includes screenings of several documentaries about Russia.
International Environmental Film and Video Festival

Planet in Focus is Canada's most acclaimed International Environmental Film and Video festival. Our annual film fest showcases compelling documentaries, animation, dramatic features, shorts, and experimental works that celebrate, question, and establish varied ways of viewing the state of our world .

The 8th Annual Festival will take place October 24-28, 2007.

Films are shown at Royal Cinema 608 College St.and Innis College Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue.

Website is: http://www.planetinfocus.org/festival
There are 40 interesting films from all over the world. Two of them are of specific interest to Russians:

Edge of Eden: Living with Grizzlies
In Kamchatka, the most easterly region of Russia, a little miracle with huge implications is in the works. Considered by many to be the most dangerous animal in the world the grizzly bear, an endangered species, finds a protector and defender in Canadian conservationist, Charlie Russell. As a surrogate mother he struggles to reintroduce orphaned cubs to the wild against the backdrop of a dramatic landscape filled with lurking predators and poachers. Filmed in the course of a year, this relationship is bound to fill you with awe and sure to win your hearts and minds.

Blockade
Russian documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa brings the haunting images of the Siege of Leningrad back into our collective memory in his reflection on the atrocities that happened in the past, lest we forget. From September 1941 to January 1944, lasting over 900 days, Hitler attempted to starve the city of Leningrad into submission. The siege of Leningrad was the longest of its kind during World War II, causing over half a million people to die, mostly from starvation.
Using rarely seen footage from the Soviet film archives, Loznitsa recreates a stunning historical account of the Siege, creating a state of the art soundtrack to accompany the silent footage. Blockade shows the gradual transformation of Leningrad: from its defensive beginnings to a horrific aftermath.

AGENDA

SPUTNIK 1 - 50 Years of Space Exploration
October 4, 2007, Toronto Aerospace Museum

On October 4, 2007, worldwide celebrations commemorate 50 years of space flight. On this day, five decades ago - October 4, 1957 - the first man-made satellite was launched into space, the first man-made object ever to orbit the Earth, captivating the public's imagination worldwide. No larger than a watermelon and weighing only 183 pounds, its "beep beep beep" signal from space was heard with baited breath as it traveled on its elliptical path.
"Now, somehow, in some new way, the sky seemed almost alien," wrote Lyndon B. Johnson. The launch of Sputnik ushered in a new era: the Space Age.

On October 4, 2007 we mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of this new age, an age of space competition and exploration, discovery and adventure, tragedy and exhilaration. At the Toronto Aerospace Museum, Critical Media presents a celebration in collaboration with the Canadian Space Society.

6:15-7:15 pm:
Reception and presentation of new media artist Slavica Ceperkovic's piece consisting of a continuous loop projection

7:15-8:00 pm:

8:25-8:30 pm:

65 Carl Hall Rd.
Его веб-сайт - torontoaerospacemuseum.com.

Между 6:15 и 7:15 рм от станции Downsview TTC station до музея будет ходить бесплатный автобус для перевозки всех желающих.

Приходите и празднуйте вместе с нами! Вход свободный (принимаются пожертвования).

Special Event: Sputnik Space Party
Free Evening Event
October 4, 2007
It's been half a century! Celebrate the beginning of the space age in 1957 when Sputnik launched the race to space.

50th Anniversary of Sputnik Celebrated in Toronto
Beep .. beep.. Thursday, October 4th marks the 50th anniversary of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I which launched the space age*. Celebrate at the Ontario Science Centre with Sputnik-themed displays, music, and activities. Enjoy awe-inspiring views through telescopes with members of the Toronto Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (weather permitting). Witness a fly-over of the International Space Station and listen as our storyteller weaves tales inspired by spaceflight. Highlighting the event is a special panel presentation at 8:00 p.m. in the Imperial Oil Auditorium, “Sputnik and the Space Age”.

PANELISTS

* Bob McDonald, host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. He remembers how the Sputnik launch helped fuel interest in space.
* Professor Lynne Viola, Department of History at the University of Toronto. Specializes in the history of the peasantry in the Soviet Union. She will speak to the impact Sputnik had on the culture and mood of people at the time.
* Steve Lang, Canadian Space Resource Centre. Works with the Canadian Space Agency and has a deep knowledge of the history of Canadian Space program.
* Robert Godwin, Author - Russian Spacecraft and Launch Vehicles: Heritage of the Space Race
* Chris Gainor, Author - Arrows to the Moon and Canada in Space.

The Sputnik Space Party runs from 7:30 – 10:30 p.m.

* The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a basketball, weighed only 183 pounds and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path. That launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.
