AGENDA

SPUTNIK 1 - 50 Years of Space Exploration
October 4, 2007, Toronto Aerospace Museum

On October 4, 2007, worldwide celebrations commemorate 50 years of space flight. On this day, five decades ago - October 4, 1957 - the first man-made satellite was launched into space, the first man-made object ever to orbit the Earth, captivating the public's imagination worldwide. No larger than a watermelon and weighing only 183 pounds, its "beep beep beep" signal from space was heard with baited breath as it traveled on its elliptical path.
"Now, somehow, in some new way, the sky seemed almost alien," wrote Lyndon B. Johnson. The launch of Sputnik ushered in a new era: the Space Age.

On October 4, 2007 we mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of this new age, an age of space competition and exploration, discovery and adventure, tragedy and exhilaration. At the Toronto Aerospace Museum, Critical Media presents a celebration in collaboration with the Canadian Space Society.

6:15-7:15 pm:
Reception and presentation of new media artist Slavica Ceperkovic's piece consisting of a continuous loop projection

7:15-8:00 pm:

8:25-8:30 pm:

65 Carl Hall Rd.
Его веб-сайт - torontoaerospacemuseum.com.

Между 6:15 и 7:15 рм от станции Downsview TTC station до музея будет ходить бесплатный автобус для перевозки всех желающих.

Приходите и празднуйте вместе с нами! Вход свободный (принимаются пожертвования).

Highlighting the event is a special panel presentation at 8:00 p.m. in the Imperial Oil Auditorium, “Sputnik and the Space Age”.

PANELISTS

* Bob McDonald, host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. He remembers how the Sputnik launch helped fuel interest in space.

That launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.

ANTHOLOGY
The “Music of Central Asia” series is a co-production of the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia and the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. The aim of the series, released worldwide by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, is to present leading exponents of Central Asia’s rich and diverse musical heritage to listeners outside the region. As a new generation of talented performers reinterprets this heritage — much of it ruptured or lost during the Soviet era — older traditions are reanimated and transformed. Music of Central Asia documents the work of musicians who represent both a mastery of their own tradition and a contemporary spirit of innovation expressed through new approaches to performance style, repertory, and technique. Each release includes a DVD with a documentary film on the featured performers as well as a map, musical instrument glossary, and short introduction to Music of Central Asia and the Aga Khan Music Initiative. These intimate, often poignant, musical portraits bring to life a group of remarkable artists whose creative achievements proclaim Central Asia’s prominence on any musical map of the world.

Nikolai Balalaika: Toronto Busker Friendly

Notes & Impressions:
Most everyone has seen a busker, these fiercely independent musicians who earn a living of sorts playing music at random spots in Toronto’s subway stations and busy street corners.

A friend of mine decided to speak to one of them, to see what makes a busker.
We talked to Nikolai Tichtchenko. Or Nicholai "Balalaika", after the musical instrument he carries with him wherever he goes, a small, guitar-like instrument which is a vital part of Russian folk music.

It is his life and joy, an instrument which he has played since the tender age of 6.
Nicholai is from the Ukraine. He graduated from the Soviet State conservatory and belonged to the musical group of the Kiev Circus in the former Soviet Union.

Their group was contracted to perform in Canada for a year however the contractor unfortunately ran out of money and before the year was out everyone in the musical group had to fend for themselves. Like Nicholai most decided to remain in Canada and are now legal residents here.

While his former colleagues have taken up other professions to secure a steady income, Nicholas remains a balalaika player to this day. As he put it, he and his instrument are inseparable.

Besides Russian folk music Nicholai also plays other types of music. A die-hard musician and hard-working busker!

He performs in shows or other events, and has been in one movie with Robin Williams and Danny DeVito "Death to Smoochy".

An earnest and courteous man, Nicholai’ formal training in music enables him to also offer guitar lessons when required.

Blog: Balalaika Virtuoso Nikolai Tichtchenko

Torontoist: Subway Idol
This is Nikolai Tichtchenko. From Kiev, Mr. Tichtchenko plays a guitar/mandolin-like Balalaika - which requires a lot of strumming. Also received high marks...

TheStar.com - GTA - Notes from the underground

What Ashifa Kassam, staff reporter of The Toronto Star and Carly Jones, cast member of this summer's hit musical Evil Dead: The Musical said about an annual audition to be buskers for the TTC. Nikolai Tichtchenko was among 169 musicians from arond the GTA area trying out this year competition.
Nikolai Tichtchenko

Instrument: He’s been playing the balalaika, a three-stringed, triangular version of the guitar, for 47 years

Day job: This is it — he’s a full time balalaika player

He says about busking: “I am from Ukraine, but my instrument is from Russia.” He’s not too worried about not getting a licence — he’s got plenty of work playing his balalaika at parties, restaurants and festivals.

Carly Jones’ Evil Take: “His hands are moving so fast you can’t even see them. What he needs is a troupe of five modern dancers behind him, doing a dance to whatever he’s playing, all dressed in pastels. It’s the only thing that could make this any better for me — it’s awesome.”

Where Jones wants him: “Downsview subway station because he needs to be around the intellectual university crowd there. Only they would truly appreciate him.”
