LITURGICAL MUSIC COMMITTEE OF THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS: October 17, 2006
The 19th Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians' Conference Concludes

The 19th Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians' Conference in North America, held under the auspices of the Liturgical Music Commission of the Synod of Bishops, was convened from Wednesday, October 4 to Sunday, October 8 , 2006. The conference was hosted by the Canadian Diocese Music Committee and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It should be mentioned that the Conference was also dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Aleksandrovich Prokhorov, the Cathedral's choir director for the past 15 years, who passed away several months ago after a battle with cancer. In his honor the 100 voice choir sang his composition, “None Who Approaches Thee...”

ЗАВЕРШИЛ СВОЮ РАБОТУ 19-й ЦЕРКОВНО-ПЕВЧЕСКИЙ СЪЕЗД В ТОРОНТО

19-й ежегодный церковно-певческий съезд в Северной Америке, созванный, как всегда, попечением Церковно-Музыкальной Комиссии при Архиерейском Синоде Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей, на сей раз собрался на востоке Канады и проходил с 4 по 8 октября. Устроителями съезда явились церковно-музыкальный комитет Монреальской и Канадской епархии, а также – собор Святыя Троицы в Торонто (Онтарио).

Следует упомянуть, что наш съезд был также посвящен памяти Владимира Александровича Прохорова, давнего бессменного руководителя хора Свято-Троицкого собора, отдавшего этому труду последние пятнадцать лет жизни. Всего несколько месяцев прошло с тех пор, как В.А. Прохоров скончался от смертельной болезни (рак). В его память сводный хор в составе всех ста участников съезда пропел, на созданную им мелодию, «Никтоже притекаяй к Тебе...»

Readings From Russia at Lincoln Center

New York Times: The Coast of Utopia: Russian Thinkers

I can not pass by this article in the New York Times “From Unread to in Demand, Thanks to ‘Utopia’" by Julie Bosman published on January 26, 2007.

“Russian Thinkers,” a 1978 collection of essays on 19th-century Russian intellectuals by the philosopher Isaiah Berlin, has virtually disappeared from bookstores across the city, including Barnes & Noble, Labyrinth Books and Shakespeare & Company. The Internet is not much help either: the book is sold out on bn.com, and though it can be ordered from Amazon, the order won’t be shipped for two or three weeks.

The culprit behind this Berlin craze turns out to be none other than Tom Stoppard and his epic three-part play, “The Coast of Utopia,” which opened at Lincoln Center on Nov. 27. Tucked deep inside the show’s playbill is a list titled “For Audience Members Interested in Further Reading,” with “Russian Thinkers” at the top.

It’s time to book a ticket to see the whole trilogy as a performance marathon in one day. The Coast of Utopia:

ABOUT THE MARATHONS
In addition to the single performances of parts 1, 2, and 3, there will be nine marathon day-long performances of the entire trilogy.

We perform very soon: on Friday, January 19, at 8 PM, at York Woods Library Theatre, 1785 Finch Ave West.

PHOENIX Theatre presents "Barishnya i immigrant", both funny and sad story (in Russian) that is based on some of our impressions of our Russian speaking community in Toronto, but is, actually, about some funny and sad sides of generally us, human beings. Dances (including the most modern style, European Segue), are incorporated as part of this story and they are among the dramatic elements of this play. No doubt - you will enjoy all of this. Of course, unless you come, you won't be able to judge. Come yourself and bring your friends and family. We will be happy to see you again among us!

Looks like just one more cultural function missed...what a shame.
Clearly, the happenings in Bloor West have improved over the years.
Interesting that Chapters has moved into the Village, I trust it is a profitable venture both for the trade and the community. I look forward to reading about more events in this fine area of the city.

Dear Odessa,

Thanks a lot for your letter. The Readings from Russia was an important event in my Canadian life. Unfortunately my writing skills in English are not sufficient for self-expression; however I do hope to deliver my thoughts and suggestions in a proper way.
For all my life I have been teaching Literature, speaking the truth, in a very effective way. I continue to be active in my professional field even here, in Toronto.
In theory, the Runnymede Chapters would like to give me a place and time for monthly meetings of the Club of Russian Literature. Also in theory, the Russian House is still looking for a place and time for weekend classes of Literature for kids and adults. But in practice...
I have another option right now. On Sundays at 7 pm I regularly give lectures on Russian Literature for the Russian Student Association’s (RSA) poetry group at Hart House (UofT). I think everyone would be welcome. The next lecture is about Egyptian Nights and Mozart and Salieri.
I also have an idea for a Royal Toronto Oblomov Society which could be the society of mostly English speaking people involved in the reading of Goncharov, Gogol, Nabokov etc. The only requirement to become a member of this society is to read the novels relaxing on the sofa, drinking hot chocolate, and from time to time exchanging opinions by phone or by e-mail.
My dear Odessa, you will be amazed, but ordinary Canadians even well educated ones, have no idea about Isaac Babel or Ilf and Petrov. They should be enlightened for their own benefits.

I just have forgotten to mention that the next lecture on Russian Literature would be not on the coming Sunday, but Sunday, January 14th, 2007.

Hermitage-niks: A Passion for the Hermitage

A Film by Aliona van der Horst

HERMITAGE-NIKS--the five-part, in-depth series version of THE HERMITAGE DWELLERS-- is not necessarily about the art that resides in the world renowned museum, but about the people who work in the Hermitage.

These "Hermitage-Niks" all have their own very personal reasons for considering the palace of Catharine the Great their "home." For them, it is a safe haven that quite literally has managed to keep the tumultuous Russian 20th century history outside its walls: from the Revolution, the terror of Stalin, WWII, the harsh post-Soviet years - all these events have left their mark on the museum. What starts out as a playful kaleidoscope of people and events in the museum gradually unfolds into a poignant account of how the dwellers' pain is transformed by their intimate relationship with a piece of art.

Episode 1
A Glimmer in the Eye
Art is an embellishment of life, but it can also be an indispensable counterweight for the darker side of existence. Given the catastrophes that Russia has gone through in the last century, art is no a superfluous luxury. Staff at the Hermitage do not work for money (their jobs are badly paid), but for "that other thing." Art handler Vadim, attendant Valentina and curator Juna tell us about their most beloved artworks and explain the cherished concept "Hermitage-nik."

Guardian Angels
Alexandra (82), icon curator, has spent her entire life rescuing icons from destruction. Just as icons come alive for Alexandra, Rembrandt's Danae comes alive for other Hermitage-niks. This painting of "unworldly beauty" was severely damaged in 1985 by a lunatic. It was a most traumatic experience for the Hermitage employees, who speak of Danae as if she were a dear friend.

Empty Frames
Olga (76) is head of museum maintenance. This unofficial czarina of the Hermitage runs her department with a firm hand and is forever marked by the Second World War when she and the Hermitage-niks saved the artworks from the mortality of war. But art was also their savior in times of hunger and cold.

Episode 4
Silent Sabotage
In the 1930s, Stalin sold off the collection's best works. The Hermitage-niks hid many works that had not already been sold, such as the wonderful paintings of Monet and Matisse, burying them away in the bowels of the museum. Stalin and his cronies called works like these "capitalistic, depraved art," but the Hermitage-niks gave the censorship commission a taste of its own medicine.

The Remains of an Era
Catherine the Great is still omnipresent in her winter palace. Her megalomaniacal, gluttonous acquisitions are in stark contrast to the Hermitage's present-day purchases. Petersburgers try to pass their last heirlooms on to the museum, while schoolchildren gape at the splendour of bygone times.

On 16 September, 2003, in the Hermitage Theater, the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ Program for the Tercentenary of St. Petersburg "Window on the Netherlands 2003" presented the premiere of the documentary "Passion for the Hermitage" ("Ermitazhniki"). This is a joint project of the State Hermitage Museum and the Hermitage Friends Society in the Netherlands, supported by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in St. Petersburg.
