Screenparty: You’re Invited!

I was pretty excited to read an invitation from Vladimir Milman to the “Screenparty," a cast and crew screening hosted by Cameron Bailey. It will be this Sunday, March 18th 2007.

“If you look closely you might recognize somebody in the first picture... Yes, true, that's me,”- wrote Vladimir.

Our congratulations to him for another big achievement. We have a proverb in Russia that says: a talented person is talented in everything. I believe it is about Vladimir.
It will be superb to go and get a sneak view of this event just in between the Russian Poetry Club’s and the Toronto Oblomov Society’s meetings.

Four short films will screen: Rock Garden: A Love Story, Last Year at Killaloe, Tell Us the Truth About Josephine, and Babysitting Andy. 7:36pm, free admission.

Innis Townhall is located within Innis College on the University of Toronto's downtown campus, at the NW corner of St. George Street and Sussex Avenue, just south of Bloor Street. It is a five minute walk from the nearest subway stop, St. George Station.

It is the same place where was a screening of "Our Motherland" by with Vitaly Mansky and a discussion with him after the film.

Csehov (1860-1904) írásai az indulatok és szenvedélyek vígjátéka, ahol a szerelem váratlanul és páratlanul változtatja meg az eseményeket.
A „Medve” minkét fõszereplõje földbirtokos. Popova hét hónapja meghalt férje miatt még mindig gyászol és élete végéig elzárkózva gyászolni akar. Szmirnov, a szomszéd földbirtokos, erõszakosan az elhunyt férj adóságának behajtásáért jelenik meg és nem zavarja a gyászoló feleség látványa. Szenvedélyes küzdelmükben Szmirnov Popovát sértéséért párbajra hívja – az egyenrangúság nevében –, mire Popova elõáll férjének pisztojaival. Ekkor Szmirnov ráérbred, hogy … (a többit a helyszínen). A darab további érdekessége, hogy a táncokat egy Pax Romana vezetõ koreografálta, akit még táncolni is láthatunk benne.
A „Leánykérõ”-ben két gazdag családdal találkozunk, akik érdekházasságra ösztönzik gyerekeik. Az eljegyzéskor a zsémbes szívû fiatalok a végsõkig folytatják egymás elleni szeszélyes küzdelmük. S a darabból megtudhatjuk, hogy eljutnak-e a holtodiglan-holtomiglanig.

PHOENIX Theatre presents "Barishnya i immigrant", both funny and sad story (in Russian) that is based on some of our impressions of our Russian speaking community in Toronto, but is, actually, about some funny and sad sides of generally us, human beings. Dances (including the most modern style, European Segue), are incorporated as part of this story. Hopefully, you will enjoy this. Of course, unless you come, you won't be able to judge. Come yourself and bring your friends and family. We will be happy to see you again among us!

Tickets ($20, $25 and $30 - with certain exceptions) can be reserved through me or if there will be any left can be purchased at the doors. Huge free parking lot. If by TTC, take Finch West bus from Finch subway and ask the driver for the York Woods Library (or after Keele street watch for the big Library sign on your left hand).

Our congratulations on your Oscar for Best Animated Short Film Torill Kove!

This is the second nomination for animator Torill Kove, who was nominated in 2000 for her first professional film, My Grandmother Ironed the King's Shirt, also co-produced by the NFB.

In The Danish Poet, Kove asks whether our lives are just coincidence – or do little things really matter? The 15-minute film follows Kasper, a poet whose creative well has run dry, on a holiday to Norway to meet a famous writer. As his quest for inspiration unfolds, it appears that a spell of bad weather, an angry dog, slippery barn planks, a careless postman, hungry goats and other seemingly unrelated factors might play important roles in the big scheme of things after all.

The Danish Poet is a co-production between the NFB (Marcy Page) and MikroFilm AS (Lise Fearnley-Norway).

Soviet genre films may be the richest of all, with the most money, the deepest resources of Socialist intent, and the most humongous stew of cultural legacies. As seen in the Harvard Film Archive’s “From the Tsars to the Stars” series of excavated Russian epics, the Soviet sci-fi films are uniquely conflicted — futurism and technological progressiveness were axioms of the kingdom, but since sci-fi is inherently a form of social critique, the films struggle with their own tropes.

The Hart House Drama Society is pleased to present three Chekhov Vaudevilles – The Bear, The Proposal, and The Evils of Tobacco as its annual mentorship show. Each year the HHDS pairs student actors, designers, and technicians with Toronto theatre professionals to produce the show. This year director Zed Pitkin leads the cast of actors and technicians.

The Vaudevilles have something for everyone: complexly stupid characters, dancing, death, heart attacks, and heartache, and a whole lot of fun!

Speaker: Judy Thompson

Sheridan College instructor Judy Thompson is startlingly successful at teaching foreign-trained professionals to speak Canadian English after the typical ESL courses that concentrate on the alphabet, spelling, and grammar have failed them. Judy’s premise is that written and spoken English are actually different languages. After learning Judy’s tips, techniques and tricks, her students’ most common response is, “Why didn’t anybody tell me this before?”

The author of Teacher You Me Washroom, her book describing her journey to discover how people from other cultures can learn to speak English (as opposed to reading and writing English), Judy will share some of her insights with us in an entertaining, amusing and passionate presentation.

Because we editors make our living working with words, Judy suspects that we, more than the "casual" reader, might have wondered about English words and their idiosyncrasies. We might even have questioned why the likes of “eight” and “ate,” for example, are pronounced the same.

Come prepared to be amazed about some of the nuances of this language we are so familiar with, make our living with, and think we know so well. Chances are we will look at English quite differently after experiencing Judy's presentation.

The Toronto branch of the Editors' Association of Canada meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month (except July, August, and December).
