This year the Junction is celebrating its 100th anniversary marking its incorporation as West Toronto in 1908. Celebrations are being planned all year, but none as big as the annual Junction Arts Festival.

Our aim is to organize the artistic line-up keeping in mind, but not limited to, the festival theme – Historic Mind / Modern Eye. At a time when we are celebrating the Junction's past we do so with one eye on the present and one on the future. The interpretations, visions, stories, hopes and dreams presented will transform this theme into a reality and help define who we are. The Junction.

We are currently accepting applications for the following categories -
Juried Visual Art Exhibit; Street Performing Artists; Art Installations;
KIDZone/Junction Community Stage; Writers and Readings; and Music.

We would like to announce this year's first participant, the Ontario Art Gallery, who will be offering three varied programs that are sure to engage the entire family. Notes & Impressions:

On Saturday, May 3, 2008, a dozen or so “flâneurs” strolled the neighbourhood tucked into the sweeping north-west curve of the CPR line north of Bloor Street West. Beginning at the elegant 1920s Lawn Bowling Clubhouse in Baird Park, named for the late mayor of West Toronto Junction, we made our way to Keele and Dundas, the still-bustling heart of the Junction. Those present shared tales of the Junction’s glory days as a railway town, its theatre district, its long "dry" years and its present resurgence as a tight-knit creative hub. We marveled at the array of religious offerings from the mainstream Victorian edifices to the Tibetan Buddhist temple (formerly the Heintzman Piano Company’s showroom), to the Hindu and African Pentecostal storefronts.
Later, we walked the undulating, leafy neighbourhood streets with their eclectic mix of Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian architecture (sometimes all on a single house!), infilled here and there with bungalows from the 40s and the odd six-plex from the 50s built on filled ravine sites. From street to street, the different building styles tell a story of the great and small, of merchants and industrialists, builders and professionals, labourers and factory workers. A builder’s house from the early 20th century showed vernacular architecture at its most innovative – a small frame house covered completely with surplus decorative terracotta.
A detour or two into the spacious laneways opened a world hidden away where song sparrows called from mature trees and along the railway line, trilliums and mayapples were emerging into the spring rain.

"This unusual house dates from about 1970. It is a good example of the sometimes ingenious approach taken to infill construction. It is tucked in beside a laneway on a tiny property with a side-built carriage house. Even though it is quite unusual in design, it fits nicely into the street. Duncan Farnan, of the Toronto Westbend Community Association, talks about it while guiding one of the 2010 Jane's Walks.

The street features a couple of the last original oaks in the West Bend, examples of the Black Oak Savannah ecology of High Park. The dip in the street results from an underground stream. 

At the start of the tape, some people are talking about a ghost, but I believe that was in connection with a different property.

Toronto, ON, May 15, 2008 - The 2008 Junction Arts Festival 'Centennial Edition', set for September 3 to 7, is sending out a "Call to Artists".

Applications are currently being accepted for the following categories: Juried Visual Art Exhibit; Street Performing Artists; Art Installations; KIDZone/Junction Community Stage; Writers and Readings and Music (all genres). The deadline is May 30, 2008.

In 2008 the Junction is celebrating its 100th anniversary of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908. Celebrations are being planned all year, but none as big as the annual Junction Arts Festival.

Our vision is to program the artistic line-up around the 2008 festival theme - Historic Mind / Modern Eye. At a time when we are celebrating the Junction's past, with 2007's record breaking attendance (200,000) and ground breaking artistic expression, we do so with one eye on the present and one on the future. The interpretations, performances, stories, hopes and dreams presented will transform this theme into reality and define who we are; The Junction.

The Junction Arts Festival Centennial Edition - is accepting applications for its 2008 Juried Art Exhibit and indoor/outdoor installations to be held from September 3 to 7. Those artists working with photography, painting/drawing, sculpture and multi-media installations are invited to submit their work by the deadline of May 30th. Application forms are also available for performers and writers. To obtain submission forms, exhibit policies, and additional information please visit our web site at www.junctionartsfest.com. The Junction is celebrating its 100th anniversary since being incorporated as West Toronto in 1908. Numerous events are being planned for the Centennial including special presentations at this year’s Junction Arts Festival. Over 150,000 people attended the 2007 festival and an increase in numbers is expected this year. Street artists, a Hands-On KidZone, the environmental Green Village and the Artists’ Market will transform Dundas Street West and the Junction into a carnival of creativity. Juried Exhibit Galleries, Impromptu Galleries and other indoor sites will be open for all 5 days. The Artists’ Market (outdoor vendors) will present their work as part of the street closure Saturday and Sunday September 6th & 7th.

About the Junction Arts Festival: JAF 2008

2008 marks the 16th Annual Junction Arts Festival with the focus on the Junction’s first Centennial Celebrations. It is quite a story. In 1908 the Junction was incorporated as Toronto City West. It rivaled the City of Toronto in size and history states that is was the last link in the rail lines that connected Ontario, Ontario North and Quebec with the rest of the country. The Junction area was a vital point for all immigrants entering into this part of the Country. As the story goes the Junction only remained incorporated for less than a year when in 1909 it amalgamated with Toronto (to help keep Toronto from bankruptcy.)

In between then and now the Junction has transformed itself many times over with on of the most recent events being the return of licensed establishment in the late 1990’s. In 2008, as the Junction is once again being touted as the biggest up and coming district in Toronto ( Toronto Life Magazine) the Junction Forum for Art and Culture is Planning Celebrations that will mark the significance of the rich history and contribution that the Junction has made to the fabric of the City.

The West Bend is one of the original neighbourhoods of the former City of West Toronto Junction, which this year celebrates its Centennial. Ecologically the area is an extension of High Park's Carolinian Forest and historically it is part of the Junction's commercial and industrial strip. The West Bend is one Toronto's lesser known neighbourhoods but extremely rich in social and visual history - the site of the first TTC route, 19th and 20th c. vernacular architecture, the Riwoche Tibetan Buddhist Temple as well as turn-of-the-century Edwardian and Victorian houses.

Come explore the various Indian Roads, flourishing laneways and the famous Girls (Edna, Wanda, Annette Street...) that form the interior of this scrabby little enclave north of Bloor, east of Keele and beside the great curve of Dundas Street West and the CPR-CNR Main lines.

The walk will be lead by Duncan Farnan, resident and independent curator and art dealer with specialty interest in unknown, unsigned and lost art. Strenuous conversation encouraged.

Come and Celebrate JoHo: Junction and History

Come and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the City of West Toronto. On April 14, 1908, the Junction was incorporated as an independent city.
The Junction Forum for Art & Culture, in association with the West Toronto Historical Society present this weekend as a kick off the year-long festivities and a weekend of free centennial events.

• The Gathering Space creative workshops
• Historic Photo Exhibit and Installation (part of CONTACT 2008 Toronto Photography Festival)
• Historic Walking Tours (April 12, April 13 at 1:00 pm, April 14 at 7:00 pm)
• Hourly Vaudeville Shows - Comedy, Music and Dance
• "Legends of the Junction" Historical Pageant involving actors, musicians, and Junction students

The weekend's events hold at the 2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue (Junction Train Platform).

One hundred years later, Monday, April 14, 2008 is declared "Junction City" Centennial Day to mark the historic Incorporation day.

With all of those booming art activities, celebrations, exhibitions, festivals, and openings of new businesses on Dundas Street West, the Junction experiences the second more advanced stage of transformation which started in 1997. Now we can associate the Junction with arts like Soho in New York City, and let's call the area the Joho. Joho is Junction, History, Toronto, Ontario, Arts, and Business. The Joho, Historic West Toronto Junction City offers unique shops, restaurants, bars, cafes like the Historic Distillery but a little bit diluted.

Collaboration of Talents: Canadian Youth Arts Network and Manifesto

The Canadian Youth Arts Network (CYAN) and Manifesto – a youth-led organization, held a significant Youth Arts Forum on Thursday March 27, 2008 at City Hall. It was an exciting and valuable event for young artists to discuss their perspectives, network and plan the community of the arts not just locally but on an international level. It is a follow up to last year’s CYAN Forum on youth arts development.

At the forum artists from all kinds of artistic organizations discussed topics such as the artists’ working conditions, space, grants, funding, various art projects, and business investment in the arts as well as means to support the artist’s various needs. One of the main goals of the discussion was to develop a framework for social mapping of arts initiatives in the city. The participants came to a consensus of having an online map of all the arts going on in the city with the artists connected and in the know of the culture that they are making. It would significantly simplify the amount of complex art projects and information happening on the internet and live, since there would be clearer understanding of who’s doing what and will inspire better interactivity of resources, collaboration and creativity.

There was an expression of how special today’s time is in terms of the many possibilities available to artists right now and that it is crucial to make use of this moment to build a sustainable environment. Another point was to make an organization of the arts globally, uniting the nations especially because there’s an opportunity for artists from other countries to visit Canada. A major concern was to come up with a way to get the vital resources to accomplish artists’ projects, and to establish studio space as well as career growth. It seemed the key element that would solve problems is collaboration of all their versatile talent. The organizers of the meeting are preparing for the Manifesto/Ignite 2008 Forum. Through artistic expression and creative projects they plan to advance policies and practices that support youth arts.

CYAN bridges the divide between arts practitioners, funders and policy makers and establishes a diverse yet collective voice for young artists. CYAN evolved out of a youth advisory that was convened for the Ignite: Youth Arts Forum. Ignite not only demonstrated a high level of energy from the youth art sector, but a need for an entity that could offer professional development and advocacy within a relevant and authentic for-youth by-youth model. Currently CYAN operates as a collective all of whom have a passion for the growth and sustainability of youth arts.

Manifesto Community Projects is a youth–led organization devoted to fostering collaboration in Toronto’s artist community in order to provide powerful platforms and resources for growth and exposure. The focal point of its activities is the annual city-wide Manifesto Festival of Urban Music & Art, in addition to a variety of community initiatives including workshop programs, art exhibitions and fundraising events.

Last week we got a chance to go to the Textile Museum. It was an extremely knowledgeable visit which inspired Mila to write a poem. Now, this magical experience not to be missed.

Никогда не предполагала, что посещение выставки "Between the Sea and the Desert" в Музее Тканей окажется столь занимательным времяпровождением.
Однако, погуляв там три часа между оригинальными экспонатами, памятуя, что все это Северная Африка, и сотворено, как минимум, пару веков назад, а так не чуждо современности, приходит на ум, что создание красоты руками, не поспевающими за летящей фантазией человека, не подвластно времени...

Воистину, ВОСТОК - дело ТОНКОЕ !!!

Канада, Центр, Музей Текстиля,
Прохладно и уже темно,
А между Морем и Пустыней
Простой наряд, но в нем тепло!

Оригинален по покрою,
Как красочно расписан он!!!
Конечно, создан он рукою
Того, кто истинно влюблен!!!

И в даму! И в свою работу!!!
И в целый Мир, в котором жил!!!
Себя им подарить охота -
Он ради этого творил!!!

I could never imagine that our visiting of an exhibition "Between the Sea and the Desert" in the Textile Museum of Canada would become such an engaging activity.
However, after having taken a three hour tour there in between the original displays and keeping in mind that this is North Africa, and those textiles were crafted at least a couple of centuries ago and they are not so odd to the present; it comes to my mind that all this beauty was created by artistic hands and will last forever.

Truly, "East is a subtle thing"!!!

It's cool, and it is already dark.

A comfortable dress which keep us warm!

Natalia Nekrassova has a Master's Degree in the History of Art from the State Moscow University (Russia). She was a rug and decorative art curator in the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow for more than 20 years and has travelled extensively to Central Asia and the Caucasus. She was also a lecturer on Islamic art at the Islamic University in Moscow. In 2002, Natalia was appointed to Curator of Oriental Carpets and Textiles at the Textile Museum of Canada and has been working extensively on developing the TMC’s rug collection.
