Visiting the Republic of Georgia – in downtown Toronto

This was my first experience attending a concert of a choir singing Georgian folk songs. The extraordinary thing about the event was the choir singers were all Canadians! It was there too that I learned there were four different Georgian choral groups in Toronto, and all of their singers are Canadian!
So many Georgian folklore enthusiasts in Canada! The question that begs to be asked: Why isn’t there any Georgian involved? Hmm…
The concert, interestingly enough, was held in a Russian Orthodox Church, and the MC turned out to be Father Oleg Kirilov of that Church.
Quite an unusual afternoon, worth repeating one day. Hopefully in the near future.

Georgia’s Independence Day in Toronto

Toronto is indeed a multicultural city. Where else can we find ourselves in a Russian Orthodox Church listening to Georgian songs performed by a Canadian choir? To commemorate Georgia’s Independence Day? And not just any Georgian songs, but Georgian folk songs ranging from lullabies to wedding cheers that are being enthusiastically preserved by world music lovers in Toronto.
Appreciation of different cultures is what brings us together, through songs, music and other arts. Perhaps the most direct, efficient, and certainly, most pleasant way.
Toronto is a great place to be to learn about the world…

Call for Performing Artists
Application Deadline May 31, 2007. Confirmation by June 15. 2007

We are looking for a wide range of indoor and outdoor Site Specific work, Main Stage performances and street performers to participate in the 2007 Junction Arts Festival.

Site Specific
The Junction has an historical and architectural uniqueness yet to be discovered. Stores, alleys, studios and more uncover a history that few no about; spaces that are ideal for live performance and installations. Performances will be encouraged to run for 2 days/nights prior to the street closure making 4 days/nights in total. Historical background on the Junction is available. Financial assistance is available up to $1000.

Main Stage
A large main stage will host work that requires a more traditional setting. These shows will run from 12noon to 11pm on Saturday and 12noon to 6pm on Sunday. All lighting, sound and stage management will be supplied. Fees are paid on a per artist basis.

Street Performers
We are also looking for performers to participate in off the curb performance art attacks. Dancers, musicians, actors, poets, and more will be contracted to work the street in impromptu art attacks that spontaneously spring upon an unsuspecting audience. Individuals and or groups are welcome to apply. Individuals please send C.V. and photo. Groups please send info package. Artist will be paid a $100 honorarium.

The Junction Arts Festival is the largest and most eclectic “art-meets-street” festival in Canada. The festival emphasizes a celebration of all arts, with a multi-disciplinary stance, using site-specific installations in unconventional spaces. This artist run festival welcomes both established and emerging artists. We make a concerted effort to appeal to both artists and potential audiences who may not have a clear understanding of the arts but are interested in learning and appreciating art no matter what form it takes. The Junction Arts Festival traditionally attracts over 100,000 people when the festival has been only two days.

The author of A HISTORY OF ODESSA, THE LAST ITALIAN BLACK SEA COLONY (2004) and of THE ITALIAN CULTURAL COMPASS OF ODESSA (forthcoming) will speak about the permanent cultural contributions of Italian 18th century immigrants in the spheres of visual arts, music, opera and the urban cultural zeitgeist of this unusual port, founded in 1794 by the Italian settlers at the invitation of Catherine the Great and as part of her Europeanization project. The lecture will inform about a unique phenomenon in history when a host society willingly absorbed the culture of her invited immigrants.

Anna Makolkin, (Ph.D. in Comparative Literature) is a well-known Canadian interdisciplinary scholar, whose numerous publications have appeared in Europe and North America. A chapter from her Book The Genealogy of Our Present Moral Disarray dealing with ethics in Montesquieu was featured on TV Ontario in May, 2006. Her books and articles cover a wide range of topics, cultures, languages and times- from universal in Aristotle, Plato,Confucius, Kant, the religious in Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, to the laws of Hammurabi and ethics in Machiavelli, and transmission of Italianness in Russia.

Story rescues no one from death, but out of the seams and lacunae of narrative a certain kind of lyric can emerge. In Notes for a Rescue Narrative, J. Mark Smith charts the oxbow turnings of diverse human voices through scepticism and belief, hope and despair, pride and humility. Inspired by the elegiac plainness of Wordsworth as much as by the many-mindedness of Pound, Smith’s poems probe into regions of experience where meaning falls away, and “the names hardly stick.”

A middle-aged British sailor remembers, decades afterwards, a strange “human-and-not-human” incident in the colonial port of Bombay. A man walking his dog near the Katyn monument in Toronto wonders at signs, and at the “mother-deep” ocean of human suffering. In a moment “out of an airport,” the speakers and story-tellers of the Mackenzie River regroup and ready themselves, not for a rescue, but for the future. Blue jays in the pine forests of the Great Basin turn through a death-dance of forgetfulness and fecundity. A traveller on a snow-bound plane straightens his spine to bear the difficult reality of an unstoried present. A man buries his long-dead father’s alpine equipment beneath a mountain in California, and finds a new welcome in the familiar “noise of chaos.”

Notes for a Rescue Narrative moves deftly between metrical and free verse forms, and includes homages to Horace, Eugenio Montale, and Antonio Machado.

J. Mark Smith was born in Eugene, Oregon and grew up in Edmonton. After twenty-five years of living in other places, including southern California and Toronto, Smith recently returned to his home-town of Edmonton to teach in the English department at Grant MacEwan College. Smith’s poems and creative non-fiction pieces have been published in literary journals and magazines. Notes For A Rescue Narrative is his first book of poems. He holds a doctorate in English from UC Irvine, and has published scholarly articles on nineteenth and twentieth century poetry and poetics. He lives with his wife, Jennifer Stewart, and their dog, Jasper, near the North Saskatchewan river valley.

On Sunday the 29th of April an ICON EXHIBITION will take place in the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church hall called "I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD". Over 50 outstanding Icons from the 16th century to contemporary times from private collections world-wide will be exhibit!
The opening ceremonies will start at 2 pm and finish at 7 pm. Guest speaker during the exhibition will be Deacon Andrei Kuraev, a distinguished professor of Theology in Moscow and author of many books. Deacon Andrew will give a lecture at 4 pm called:"The Theology of the Holy Icon". The Lecture will be translated into English. Everyone is welcome!

29 апреля при Свято-Троицком соборе в Торонто (Русская Православная Зарубежная Церковь) пройдет выставка православных икон «Свет миру» («I am the light of the world»).
На выставке будут представлены более 50 икон XVI-XX веков из частных коллекций. Время работы выставки с 14.00-19.00.
На выставке выступит приглашенный лектор — профессор Московской духовной академии диакон Андрей Кураев. В 16.00 он прочитает лекцию на тему "Богословие иконы".

А.М.-Ваше Преосвященство, надеюсь, Вам понравилась выставка, есть некоторые идеи создать такие же выставки в Америке. Может быть, в Метрополитен там большая заинтересованность среди русских прихожан.
К.-Я думаю это первая выставка. Потом можно делать ее и выездной. Не только в Америку можно и ближнее и в дальнее зарубежье, в Европу, потому что русская икона – она известна, она славится, надо, чтобы мир познакомился с русской иконой и через икону познакомился и с православием. Я служил в Америке, я знаю, какой интерес там к православной иконе.
А.М.-Даст бог. Я знаю, своими глазами видел, как люди тянутся. Многие инословные, многие из других культур. С большим интересом сейчас относятся к подъему духовного искусства в России, духовной жизни в России и для них это будет замечательный пример, безусловно, для их духовного роста, для их поддержки.
К.-Помогай Господь вам тоже там, в Америке, в Канаде, вообще в зарубежье принять православие и развивать тоже православное искусство.
А.М.-Спаси господи, Владыка. Спасибо.

On April 20, 2007 Christ Church Deer Park is hosting a sparkling and magnificent evening of opera and operetta in a programme to include arias and duets from G. Bizet's Carmen, and popular operetta arias by Lehar, Strauss, Kalman, and much more.
Performers are Helena Holl (Soprano), Geoffrey Butler (Tenor), Jan Vaculik (Bass-Baritone), Mila Pashanova (Soloist Pianist). The show is also narrated by Anthony Morizio and Violetta Holl.

PROGRAM:

Part I: Opera

The first part of the concert will feature a melodrama in one act titled Carmen. This French opera was composed by Georges Bizet and based on a novel by Prosper Merimee. The opera was premiered at the Opéra Comique of Paris on March 3, 1875. Today, it is one of the world's most popular operas. In fact, Opera America claims it to be the fourth most-performed opera in North America.

Scene 1:
Imagine a square in Seville, Spain in the 19th century surrounded by factories and barracks. A bell announces the end of the shift at the factory. Among the factory workers is Carmen, the beautiful gypsy girl who catches sight of Don José and boldly goes up to him singing. Noticing his indifference, she challenges him by dancing a vortical "Habanera":"Love you not me, then I love you, / Yet, if I love you, beware of me!", and throwing a red rose in his direction she leaves.

Scene 2:
At José’s feet lies the flower thrown by Carmen. Hesitatingly, he picks it up, presses it to his nostrils and draws in its subtle perfume in a long breath. Then, still as if involuntarily, or as if a magic spell lies in its odour, he places the flower under his shirt and over his heart. It is a constant reminder of his growing love for Carmen. The ''torero'' Escamillo, winner of the Granada bullfight, arrives and is immediately attracted to Carmen.
Carmen is already thinking of other suitors and her indifference accentuates Don José's jealousy. This jealousy leads to a fight between the two men.

Scene 3:
The day of the bullfight Escamillo, appears arm in arm with Carmen as Don José is spying on her. Carmen knows this, but nevertheless defies the danger. José appears, humbles himself before Carmen and begs her to start a new life with him. Carmen tells him:"You never can make me love you again. No one can make me do anything. Free I was born, free I die." Escamillo's victory interrupts the bitter discussion. Carmen rushes towards the torero. When José stops her, she brutally, cynically and openly declares her love for the torero. José, blinded by his mad passion, stabs her in the heart. Don José falls on Carmen's body, cries out to her in desperation and lets himself be arrested. He has killed his love.

INTERMISSION

Part II: Operetta

Performers will let the magic of the operetta take over from famous composers such as Lehar, Strauss and Kalman. You will enjoy well known arias from The Gypsy Princess, Countess Maritza, The Circus Princess, and much more.

Ottawans can ring in the New Year Austrian-style with "A Salute to Vienna". Billed as "An official recreation of Vienna's famous New Year's concert," the performance features something called the "Strauss Symphony of Canada™" conducted by Bernhard Schneider, with soprano Helena Holl, tenor Wolfgang Gratschrmaier and the National Ballet of Hungary.
