On January 14, 2012, my wife and I took our niece to discover the Classical Kids Live! production of Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage, as the second instalment of the 2011-2012 Young People’s Concerts Series.

It was the only opportunity to attend a couple of CK performances (at 1:30 and 3:30 pm) in our city this season ($26.50 per the most expensive seat). CK is based in Chicago, Illinois. They are currently on tour showcasing other productions — Beethoven Lives Upstairs, Tchaikovsky Discovers America and Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery — across North America. If you are not familiar with this company (as was the case with us until the concert), I would highly recommend you to visit their website for more information: Overview: The Classical Kids LIVE! Theatrical Symphony Concert Series.

Our audience of all ages was treated to a splendid two-actor performance (directed and produced by Paul Pement), accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Joshua Weilerstein with Patricia Krueger soloing on the piano.

Chris Petschler (as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) and Natalie Berg (as maestro’s son Karl Thomas Mozart), dressed in the 18th century era costumes, told the father-and-son relationship story through dialogue, dance and song under the multicoloured stage light palette.

Karl “hates” his boarding school and longs to be living at home, pleading with his great father to agree to it, fantasizing about their exciting touring life together. Wolfgang shares a few childhood memories with his son. Karl begins to realize how uneasy his great father’s life really is, involving both the pleasures and pressures of fame. He relives young Wolfgang’s concert visits to London, Rome and Paris. Then, father and son unite in playing roles of The Magic Flute characters. Eventually, Mozart Sr. agrees to Mozart Jr.’s wish in exchange for Karl’s promise to be a hardworking student rather than a mischievous loafer.

Indeed, the story is a wonderful lesson of compromise and mutual understanding to all fathers, sons and everyone concerned. It was quite heart-warming to hear the thunderous applause as the final chords sounded. Bravo to all who attended for dedicating their precious Saturday afternoon off work to something that makes us all, children and adults alike, better people.

P.S. Most certainly, the highlight of the show was the choral performance of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by both the actors and the audience.

I am so glad that Faust is on the list of 10 movies making the biggest impact at 2011 film festivals.
Faust (Russia)

Based on the Faust legend and its literary adaptations, Aleksandr Sokurov’s latest version of the man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for his knowledge has received much acclaim worldwide.

This Russian production (although the dialogue is in German) was nominated for Best Film at the London Film Festival. However, it was in Venice where this picture was most well-received.

Considered to be one of the top three most important and revered film festivals alongside Berlin and Cannes, the jury at Venice awarded Sokurov’s feature with its grandest prize – the Golden Lion for best film.

Here is the whole list:
  • Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (Turkey)
  • We Have A Pope (Italy)
  • Michael (Austria)
  • The Artist (France)
  • This Must Be The Place (Italy)
  • A Separation (Iran)
  • Faust (Russia)

My Perestroika

A feature documentary by
Robin Hessman

Opens in Toronto on Friday, December 2, 2011

After winning awards and critical acclaim at festivals and theatrical engagements in over 80 U.S. markets, Robin Hessman’s “My Perestroika” opens in Canada beginning in Toronto on Friday, December 2, 2011.

When the USSR broke apart in 1991, a generation of young people faced a new realm of possibilities. An intimate epic about the extraordinary lives of this last Soviet generation, Robin Hessman’s feature documentary debut tells the stories of five Moscow schoolmates who were brought up behind the Iron Curtain, witnessed the joy and confusion of glasnost, and reached adulthood right as the world changed around them. Through candid first-person testimony, revealing verité footage, and vintage home movies, Hessman, who spent many years living in Moscow, reveals a Russia rarely ever seen on film, where people are frank about their lives and forthcoming about their country. Engaging, funny, and positively inspiring, in My Perestroika politics is personal, honesty overshadows ideology, and history progresses one day, one life at a time.

At the center of the film is the Meyerson family.

Borya and Lyuba are married and have a son, Mark. They are both history teachers at Moscow’s School #57. As we are drawn into the fabric of their everyday lives, we hear stories of two very different Soviet childhoods: Lyuba was a conformist who would salute the TV when the Soviet hymn played, while Borya preferred to subvert the system whenever possible.

Their childhood classmates provide their own perspectives.

Romeo and Juliet World Premiere
National Ballet of Canada
November 16-27, 2011
Four Seasons Centre for the Perfoming Arts
145 Queen Street West, Toronto

A historic event took place on November 16, 2011 in Toronto - The world premiere of the new "Romeo and Juliet" ballet was greatly anticipated by the full house audience at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. When the curtain lifted on an entirely original choreography by the renowned artist, Alexei Ratmansky, a timeless tale of undying love unfolded.

The National Ballet of Canada’s Guillaume Cote and Elena Lobsanova were unforgettable as the famous star-crossed lovers. Their performance moves the heart to tears, and reminds us of the enduring love that triumphs over death. The young dancers reached sublime perfection in their portrayal of the tragic couple. Guillaume Cote is a high-energy, romantic Romeo, who emits vitality and valour with every move. Elena Lobsanova is breathtaking as the exuberant Juliet; she conveys deep emotions and intricate steps through brilliant lightness and purity.

The William Shakespeare's classic love story is vibrantly expressed by the masterful interplay of characters whose roles are integral to the plot. Alexei Ratmansky’s choreography is rich with complicated lifts, jumps and turns, every moment of the ballet is active and emotive, filled with complex dance sequences, clever humour and powerful drama. Piotr Stanczyk dances a witty and charismatic Mercutio and Jiri Jelinek portrays an ominous Tybalt, their actions together with the rivalry of the two houses are pivotal to the fate of Romeo and Juliet.

The ballet builds in dramatic intensity and reaches its apex in the last act with the fateful end of the lovers’ lives. But their love lives on as Romeo and Juliet, husband and wife, follow each other into eternity. Their love unites rivalling families and transcends death, as Romeo and Juliet live on forever in spirit, saved by each others’ love. It is this vital message that the ballet conveys, as the audience sees its beloved characters dying in each others’ arms.

The new ballet is an epic undertaking to resurrect a story which is based on true events - a story which tends to repeat itself at various times in history, showing that its message is not understood. It takes great masterpieces such as the one born on the stage of the National Ballet of Canada, to transmit the moral of the story anew. This phenomenal new choreography, set to legendary music by Sergei Prokofiev, is created by great masters and artists, including set and costumes design by Richard Hudson. It is a production which unlike the previous version of the ballet involves the full corps de ballet of the Company and is a full-length classical ballet attuned to the contemporary life.

On stage until November 27, 2011, the groundbreaking ballet is an inspiring and exhilarating experience which will be cherished for generations. To see this beautiful ballet, with its exceptional dancers, superlative choreography and outstanding performance, is to participate in history and to realise the constant moral of life, that love never fails and endures everything.

Featured Analysis: National Ballet celebrates 60 years in style
The National Ballet takes a great leap of faith with a top choreographer's new production of the classic love story Romeo and Juliet: There aren't too many people who dare to re-work a Shakespeare classic, but the National Ballet of Canada has done just that to mark its 60th anniversary. It's a gamble costing almost 2-million dollars, but with the help of an acclaimed choreographer - one that's paying dividends.
Arisa Cox has the story tonight
