WELCOME WISE DAUGHTERS

Mary Breen is opening the Wise Daughters Craft Market in the Junction and the response has been overwhelming. She has been welcomed to the community by bloggers, artists and residents eager to support a new initiative that will feature the work of local artisans and artists. Her two story studio opening Saturday January 31 in the old Pilates Studio on Quebec just south of Dundas promises to be a gathering point for community members of all ages.

She says that a lot of the things at Wise Daughters can inspire you to make them yourself. In a recession people need to make things on their own, especially from found, recycled and repurposed objects. Examples abound at Wise Daughters, from the hanging mobiles of Rhona Jones to the primitive folk art dolls of Paula Rossley whose characters come with biographical information of extraordinary detail. She has two dozen vendors, about two thirds of whom are selling their work on consignment.

Also featured are the works of Junction area artists Rhonda Nolan, Sandra Muscat and potter Cori Sandler. In pride of place is a sewing machine owned by Mary’s mother. Who wanted to be a fashion designer and instead became a bacteriologist at Sick Kid’s Hospital. Mary’s life has also been dedicated to a unique path merging public sector work with an artistic sensibility. She has worked for organizations concerned with at risk youth, labour history and adult literacy. Wise Daughters supports the work of Sketch, offering creative expression to the homeless, and the women’s craft/artisan collective Sistering.

The Craft Market will be open late Thursday and Friday nights. Thursday night is Sit and Stitch night from 7-9pm. Drop in to knit, needlepoint, crochet or whatever. Mary will also be offering a number of public workshops including Storytelling: Ideas to Stage with Morgan Jones-Phillips, Journal with Paint with Rhonda Nolan and Beaded Necklace with Katherine Flynn.

Drop in and welcome Wise Daughters to the Junction. Inspire yourself!

"Hello to old friends and to all the new people who have joined the Wise Daughters email list!

On opening day, January 31, it was wonderful to have the company of so many artists whose work is in the shop. And my heartfelt appreciation to members
of the community who came out in droves to show their support. Check out photos on the Junction arts and parenting blogs:
http://artjunction.blogspot.com and http://junction-parents.blogspot.com.

Now that the opening flurry of activity is over, it's time to get crafty!

This Thursday, February 5 is the first weekly Sit 'n' Stitch Night from 7 - 9 pm. Bring whatever you're into: knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery... It's free!

Then Sunday, February 8, make lovely greeting cards with Rhonda Nolan(www.rhondanolan.com). She'll be back Tuesday, February 17 to help you express yourself through journaling with paint.

And as an alternative to the same old Valentine's Day wining and dining, on Saturday, February 14, come swap some stories with the incredible Morgan Jones-Phillips, who will cap the evening with a performance of The Emergency
Monologues. Many thanks to Morgan's band Endsville (www.endsville.ca) for the fabulous live music on opening day.

To brighten this dullest of months, Katherine Flynn will be here Saturday, February 21 to teach you how to make a gorgeous double strand woven tigertail necklace.

Full details for all February workshops are below.

Workshops take place in the spacious and bright lower gallery of Wise Daughters, at 3079B Dundas West (facing Quebec Ave just south of Crema Café).

Please pre-register by calling 416-761-1555 or dropping in.
