Venue: Latitude 44 Gallery Framing Décor

Details
As part of the 2019 Retrospective, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new book "Persephone's Eden: A Celebration of the Life and Works of Michael Reeves”. The book is a visual delight showcasing many of Michel's well-known works as well as previously unseen early paintings. The book is punctuated by a series of essays contributed by Michael's family, friends, colleagues, collectors and critics, detailing his life from his early days and studies as a student at the Bath Academy of Art, through his career as an antiques dealer in London and Toronto, to his transition into full time painting and the eventual restoration of his Port Perry studio and property following his death.
Michael Reeves is arguably one of the last Neo-Romantic painters of his generation. His peers and mentors have been Directors and Trustees of the Tate and National Galleries in England. In 2005, Joan Murray considered his works a "triumph of individualism". The book title, "Persephone's Eden" is named after the land where he and his wife Norma found their place in paradise on Lake Scugog in 1984, the works Michael produced there are the product of his dream come true.
Through this book, we hope to create a deep understanding and appreciation for Michael and his extraordinary works and to shed light onto his contribution to the world of international and Canadian art.
Along with a selection of paintings from his most prolific phase during the late 1980's to early 2000's in Port Perry, the Retrospective in 2019 is the first time any of Michael's 1950's works have ever been shown.

The book launch will be held at the Latitude 44 Gallery in Toronto on May 16th from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs.

Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.

Walks take place on May 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2018.

Here are some walks that take place in the West End of Toronto!

Jane's Walk: Literary Swansea
Literary Swansea
Led by Swansea Historical Society

SATURDAY, MAY 5
10:00am – 12:00pm
Alex Ling Fountain, NW corner of Bloor and Jane across from Jane subway station

A variety of authors and poets have called Swansea home. We’ll pass sites of significance to their lives or their writings and pause to read from the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery, Bernice Thurman Hunter, Raymond Souster, and more. This Walk will end at Swansea Town Hall.

Jane's Walk: The Pulse of the Junction; Our Stories

The Pulse of the Junction; Our Stories
Led by Eugenia Evans & Tuli Parubets

SATURDAY, MAY 5
2:00 – 3:00 pm
Meet at the northwest corner of Dundas and Pacific in front of the mural

We will showcase the various murals, architecture, diverse cultures, breweries and businesses while talking about the history of the railroad and its role in the development of the Junction. We will highlight the past, talk about the present and explore its future. We will end on the north side of Dundas in front of Malta Park.

Walk as Workout
Led by Lee Scott/WoW Power Walking

SATURDAY, MAY 5 3:30 PM
SUNDAY, MAY 6 9:45 AM
Meet at the first parking lot on the left after entering Humber Bay Park west via Humber Bay Park Road West. Look for Lee by the public washrooms. She’ll be wearing a brightly coloured vest.

Join international fitness presenter, power walker and Toronto citizen, Lee Scott, as she takes you on a fun and informative walk. Research shows that cardiovascular, bone, and brain health improve when we exercise. Learn how rethinking your daily walk can improve posture, strength, heart health, and happiness. Let’s talk about how you can make that happen outside in our beautiful city. We’ll take our walk along the shores of Lake Ontario for a real mood boost and appreciation of Toronto’s waterfront trail. The Walk will end at our start position in the parking lot.

Jane's Walk: Sculpture Hill – High Park in 1967

Sculpture Hill – High Park in 1967
Led by Bianca Lakoseljac, Swansea Historical Society

SUNDAY, MAY 6  2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
SE corner, Bloor Street and High Park Avenue

Few places provide as much personal inspiration in Toronto as High Park. Did you know that in 1967 an Art Symposium was held within the park as a Centennial Project and added ten sculptures to Sculpture Hill? We’ll explore the artistic and literary significance of High Park including Sculpture Hill with author Bianca Lakoseljac, who has featured High Park prominently in her work, and the Swansea Historical Society. This Walk will end at Sculpture Hill in High Park.

Jane's Walk: Aggie’s Wildflower Walk

Aggie’s Wildflower Walk
Led by Madeleine McDowell

SUNDAY, MAY 13 1:30 – 3:00 pm
Lambton House, 4066 Old Dundas Street

Explore the woods and river flats of Lambton Mills through the eyes of the 19th century. The area was a favourite spot of artist Agnes Dunbar Moodie, daughter of pioneer writer Susanna Moodie. Perhaps Agnes used the flowers here as models for her paintings, published in an 1867 book called Canadian Wild Flowers. Hear stories of ‘Aggie’ and the history of this area while we look for the wildflowers that inspired her. Return to the Lambton House for refreshments.

About Artist: Ozrenko Mrkic

Art Salon 2013: Ozrenko Mrkic
Credit: artisticway.ca: ArtSalon 2013
My work is personal; each piece represents an individual thought and experience I have drawn from my own sense of spirituality and culture. It is a subconscious journey between my body, my soul and surrounding energy.

My approach can be understood by the old adage: “Paint from nature, but do not paint nature as it is.” This is essentially what I try to do. If I were to make myself strictly paint from reality I would be undermining my own sense of reason with every move I make.

To me, paintings clothe the processes of the human soul in a plastic form and function to enrich our lives. Unlike science, art requires one to explore new territory often without any controls in place. I enjoy the fact that art is not definitive and offers such a broad field to make bold statements.

FOR DREAMS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT - THEY ALWAYS  HAVE TO  STAY AWAKE

Visions of a Dynamic Earth
Mark Robinson

May 1–31

Junction - Axis Gallery & Grill
3048 Dundas St W

The Earth moves and we must move with it. Robinson is a world explorer and storm chaser. Carrying his camera, along with a healthy sense of adventure, he has documented Earth at its most dynamic. He’s captured tornadoes, volcanoes, fires, lightning, and ice, all of which are part of a planet that is forever changing. These are moments in motion stopped for 1/60th of a second.

night vision
Richard Kuzniak

May 1–31
Reception: May 6, 6pm–9pm

Junction - Coolearth Architecture Inc.
386 Pacific Ave

At night, the camera lens can reveal more than what the eye initially registers, creating a painterly quality that emphasizes colour and form. The variety of illumination, whether street lamp, fluorescent, neon, or sodium vapour, endows a unique glow to even the most common scenes and objects. Parking lots, laneways, storage yards, industrial sites, parks, and businesses closed for the night take on new personas, transformed by the darkness.

aqua botanica
Linda Briskin

May 2–21
Reception: May 6, 6pm–9pm

Junction - Helen + Hildegard
3036 Dundas St W

The series aqua botanica honours the ephemeral offerings from the sea. Each photograph preserves seaweed washed up on the western shores of Newfoundland, and attempts to capture both its essence and its dimensionality. This series also speaks to the capacity of photography to preserve, transform, and reimagine found objects.

Keshavarz’s In Living Colour collection focuses on early morning street life and interactions and exchanges happening as people leave nightclubs, stumbling onto the streets. With Rural Scenes, Lindon, who left the city two years ago, shows a collection of scenes capturing the ups and downs of rural life.

Phillipa Croft

May 1–31
Reception: May 6, 6pm–9pm

Toronto at Night with Available Light
Krista White

May 1–28

Junction - Vesuvio's Pizzeria and Spaghetti House
3010 Dundas St W

Toronto at Night with Available Light is an exploration of positive and negative space in which everyday objects transform in the sparse light and become altered and unfamiliar. White’s challenge is to create effective and evocative images within the limits of nighttime, using only the light that is present. Prints in black and white only further the impression of darkness and the sometimes haunting effect of limited light.

Curated by Krista White

Grand Motion
Jim Blomfield

May 1–31
Reception: May 6, 6pm–9pm

Junction - West Toronto Paint
2975 Dundas St W

How do you photograph what you cannot see? To address this challenge, Blomfield chooses to use artistic licence, a swing lens camera, appropriate shutter speeds, and camera rotation. He is thus able to mimic, photographically, what his imagination tells him is happening, unseen, with and within seemingly smooth, steady streams of water flowing over dams along the Grand River.

Sweetland, Canada
Kristin Sweetland

May 6–31
Reception: May 6, 6pm–9pm

Junction – Dirty Food Catering
3070 Dundas St W

Sweetland, Canada features photographs from the photographer’s continuing Adventures in Sweetland series of self-portraits. The images were captured during her extensive travels back and forth across Canada as a solo touring musician. Depicting a side of the country that is mysterious, magical, and at times quite spiritual, this series celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation and tells the story of one Canadian’s journey across a fantastical land that is seemingly all her own.

Featured  Exhibition
Jardim
Meera Margaret Singh

May 6–June 3
Reception: May 6, 4pm–6pm

May 27, 3pm–4:30pm
Artist Talk
Artist Meera Margaret Singh will discuss her exhibition in the context of her 2012 residency in Jardim, Brazil, which generated the series on display in the gallery.

Zalucky Contemporary
3044 Dundas St W

The photographs in Jardim were taken by Meera Margaret Singh during a two-month artist residency in 2012 in Jardim Canada, Brazil, an isolated industrial town primarily made up of factories, warehouses, and improvised housing for a transitory workforce. Captured through the camera is an urban landscape oscillating between growth and decay. What is revealed through the printed photographs, however, is a self-reflexive meditation on the artist’s experience of that time.

Contact: Zalucky Contemporary

Meera Margaret Singh: Jardim, at Zalucky Gallery, May 6 to June 3
The Toronto artist made these photographs at a residency in an isolated industrial town called Jardim Canada in Brazil, expressing the tensions of living in a place that’s unsafe for women.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORONTO’S FIRST MAJOR EVENT OF THE SUMMER FESTIVAL SEASON ANNOUNCES 2017 DATE

The Junction Summer Solstice is scheduled for Saturday June 24, allowing festival goers to celebrate the start of Toronto’s warmest season from noon to midnight on Dundas Street West, from Keele to High Park Street and beyond.

Toronto, ON - April 1, 2017 - The Junction’s Summer Solstice Festival has been a long standing tradition on the west-side of Toronto, offering crowds of all ages a full day of music, art, outdoor patios, leisurely shopping, and entertaining programs. An early focus on healthy living activities and events has expanded to include live music, artists, premier dining options, and children's programming.

The Junction BIA has announced today that the Summer Solstice event will be held on Saturday June 24 this year. Those working on the festival promise an increase in activities from the already packed agenda of previous years. The 2017 event will also see an expansion of shopping and programming into evening, to intensify the nighttime portion of the festival.

“We have seen a big spike in the number of amazing restaurants opening up in the area and so many of them started getting accolades from local press right off the bat! As a neighbourhood that includes Shamone, Stadt Cafe, and Famous Last Words, to just name a few places getting incredible reviews right now, we want the festival to really feature our great restaurants and nightlife this year,” says Christine Sweeton, Executive Director for The Junction BIA.

“But Summer Solstice is far from being just a food festival,” adds Chair of The Junction BIA Board of Management, Heather Phillips. “We always try to provide things that cover a wide range of interests and make the event fun for all ages.” Phillips co-owes a local art studio and supply shop. Her contributions to past festivals have been among the most memorable and often include workshops or games for kids.

In preparation for the event, The Junction BIA is busy scheduling entertainment, organizing local vendors, and working with event partners to ensure that the Summer Solstice event is the best possible kick-off to the Toronto festival season.

A Call for Donations: In Producing 'Quilted Portraits' of the Junction Community

A Call for Donations: In Producing 'Quilted Portraits' of the Toronto Junction Community
Image: Special Request to Junction Community Residents

Special Request to Junction Community Residents

Zalucky Contemporary, a local contemporary art gallery, is currently collecting donations of unused and over-worn clothing that will be used in an upcoming exhibition in February 2017 by Toronto-based artist Lili Huston-Herterich.
"I am interested in producing 'quilted portraits' of the Junction community through recycled textile materials that are no longer useable. So really, clothes that have been loved and worn to the point of rags - holey socks, stained shirts, ripped or torn garments, or otherwise are all fair game!

The final works will be photographic, and I will be acknowledging the support of all participating clothing donators (upon permission)."

~ Lili Huston-Herterich

Donations can be made directly to the gallery, through the front door mail-slot. Please make sure to leave your name and contact details if you would like to receive public credit.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the gallery via email at info@zaluckycontemporary.com.
