Participate in CONTACT 2018

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival invites participation from photographic artists for May 2018, either as a Featured Exhibition or an Open Exhibition.

The Featured Exhibitions program showcases high-calibre exhibitions and recognizes exceptional photo-based projects. Featured Exhibitions are subject to a juried submission process, and are eligible for The Gattuso Prize, a $5,000 award that acknowledges an outstanding exhibition in the Festival.

The Open Exhibitions program provides a valuable opportunity to have photographic work exhibited in conjunction with other emerging and established artists, and to inspire and engage with the city through photography. Open Exhibitions are non-juried and are therefore accessible to all interested participants and exhibition spaces.

All artists/organizers must have a confirmed exhibition space in order to participate in CONTACT.

A participation fee applies:

Early bird fee (available until November 6, 2017)
$275 + HST

Regular registration fee (after November 7, 2017)
$350 + HST

Important Deadlines:
November 13, 2017 - Featured Exhibition submissions due
December 4, 2017 - Open Exhibitions registration closes

Submissions are not sought for CONTACT's curated programming, including Primary Exhibitions, Public Installations and Special Events.

Where: Dundas & Keele, Dundas strip from Quebec Ave to Indian Grove

A Fall Fun Day for The Entire Family

Enjoy a day of family fun at Pumpkinfest in the Junction on Saturday, October 28. Starting at 2:00 p.m., children of all ages are welcome to design or carve pumpkins at the Junction Train Platform (2964 Dundas St. West, Toronto, Ontario). The pumpkins, donated by the Sweet Potato, are free to carve and all tools are provided.

The Junction will be full of fall spirit, with activities for all ages. Those in costume can go trick-or-treating at local businesses (local for the Pumpkinfest Trick or Treat Location decal on their windows) and participate in The Junction City Music Hall’s Monster Mash Costume Dance Party from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

The Monster Mash is a family event, it is $5 per group, and everyone is welcome. Come on out with your costumes, dance, and play pinball and win some great prizes.

Weather permitting, there will be a Bouncy Castle at Junction Health.

At night, the camera lens can reveal more than what the eye initially registers, creating a painterly quality that emphasizes colour and form. Parking lots, laneways, storage yards, industrial sites, parks, and businesses closed for the night take on new personas, transformed by the darkness.

Anderson exhibits his series Yellow Cloth, which explores colour, shape, and light as the cloth morphs beneath the surface of the lakeshore. Keshavarz’s In Living Colour collection focuses on early morning street life and interactions and exchanges happening as people leave nightclubs, stumbling onto the streets. With Rural Scenes, Lindon, who left the city two years ago, shows a collection of scenes capturing the ups and downs of rural life.

Toronto at Night with Available Light is an exploration of positive and negative space in which everyday objects transform in the sparse light and become altered and unfamiliar. White’s challenge is to create effective and evocative images within the limits of nighttime, using only the light that is present. Prints in black and white only further the impression of darkness and the sometimes haunting effect of limited light.

How do you photograph what you cannot see? To address this challenge, Blomfield chooses to use artistic licence, a swing lens camera, appropriate shutter speeds, and camera rotation. He is thus able to mimic, photographically, what his imagination tells him is happening, unseen, with and within seemingly smooth, steady streams of water flowing over dams along the Grand River.

Sweetland, Canada features photographs from the photographer’s continuing Adventures in Sweetland series of self-portraits. The images were captured during her extensive travels back and forth across Canada as a solo touring musician. Depicting a side of the country that is mysterious, magical, and at times quite spiritual, this series celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation and tells the story of one Canadian’s journey across a fantastical land that is seemingly all her own.

Artist Meera Margaret Singh will discuss her exhibition in the context of her 2012 residency in Jardim, Brazil, which generated the series on display in the gallery.

The photographs in Jardim were taken by Meera Margaret Singh during a two-month artist residency in 2012 in Jardim Canada, Brazil, an isolated industrial town primarily made up of factories, warehouses, and improvised housing for a transitory workforce. Captured through the camera is an urban landscape oscillating between growth and decay. What is revealed through the printed photographs, however, is a self-reflexive meditation on the artist’s experience of that time.

The Toronto artist made these photographs at a residency in an isolated industrial town called Jardim Canada in Brazil, expressing the tensions of living in a place that’s unsafe for women.

TORONTO’S FIRST MAJOR EVENT OF THE SUMMER FESTIVAL SEASON ANNOUNCES 2017 DATE

The Junction Summer Solstice is scheduled for Saturday June 24, allowing festival goers to celebrate the start of Toronto’s warmest season from noon to midnight on Dundas Street West, from Keele to High Park Street and beyond.

Toronto, ON - April 1, 2017 - The Junction’s Summer Solstice Festival has been a long standing tradition on the west-side of Toronto, offering crowds of all ages a full day of music, art, outdoor patios, leisurely shopping, and entertaining programs. An early focus on healthy living activities and events has expanded to include live music, artists, premier dining options, and children's programming.  

The Junction BIA has announced today that the Summer Solstice event will be held on Saturday June 24 this year. Those working on the festival promise an increase in activities from the already packed agenda of previous years. The 2017 event will also see an expansion of shopping and programming into evening, to intensify the nighttime portion of the festival.

“We have seen a big spike in the number of amazing restaurants opening up in the area and so many of them started getting accolades from local press right off the bat! As a neighbourhood that includes Shamone, Stadt Cafe, and Famous Last Words, to just name a few places getting incredible reviews right now, we want the festival to really feature our great restaurants and nightlife this year,” says Christine Sweeton, Executive Director for The Junction BIA.

“But Summer Solstice is far from being just a food festival,” adds Chair of The Junction BIA Board of Management, Heather Phillips. “We always try to provide things that cover a wide range of interests and make the event fun for all ages.” Phillips co-owes a local art studio and supply shop. Her contributions to past festivals have been among the most memorable and often include workshops or games for kids.

In preparation for the event, The Junction BIA is busy scheduling entertainment, organizing local vendors, and working with event partners to ensure that the Summer Solstice event is the best possible kick-off to the Toronto festival season.

The Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016.

There are opportunities for artists seeking venues to exhibit with one of the neighbourhood Business Improvement Area (BIA) groups that partner with the festival each year. The BIAs send out calls for submissions in autumn, and match up artists with venues. The 2016 Call for Submissions from the Junction BIA can be found here.

These exhibitions include a wide range of projects, promote independent artists and collectives, and facilitate community collaboration. Basic expenses for the library are paid for by our property taxes, so funds from the Function will go towards important resources not covered by municipal funding.

WHAT:  Tickets for the 6th annual Function in the Junction are now on sale.

WHERE:  Get your tickets in person at Latitude 44 Gallery and Agora Cafe (both cash only), or online (e-transfer) at the Function website.

The event takes place at the West Toronto Masonic Temple, 151 Annette Street.

WHY:  Organized by the Junction Residents Association (JRA), the Function is a lively annual evening to share local food, drinks and music and raise money for a worthy neighbourhood cause. This year's proceeds will go to the Annette Street Public Library, a cornerstone of our community that offers a welcoming space for readers and an inclusive variety of programs as well as community gathering space.

WHEN:  Tickets are on sale now. The event takes place Sat., April 11 starting at 6 pm.

HOW:  Help us plan a great evening: buy your tickets soon. Tickets are $45 each and include a delicious 6 pm sit-down dinner made by local restaurants and served by firefighters from the Junction's very own Station 423. Silent-auction items are donated by a host of fabulous neighbourhood businesses. We'll have a live auction with cool items, too. Our cash bar is supported by Junction Craft Brewing and Toronto Distillery Co. And of course we’ll have live music by Junction artists to keep us all going into the wee hours. The Junction will be participating in the Toronto Design Offsite Festival once again.

The fifth annual Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TODO) showcases the best in Canadian design at events across the city, from unexpected prototypes to immersive installations from January 19-25, 2015. Nearly one quarter of the exhibitions will be featured here in The Junction.

TO DO is a not-for-profit, independent design festival that aims to provide exposure for local and national designers. They also foster public understanding and knowledge of the practice of design and create an ongoing presence that promotes Canada’s creativity, drawing on great thinkers, practitioners, and educators to a deliver an innovative celebration of art and design. During the brisk Toronto winter they offer the best in installations, furniture, industrial design, conceptual design and more, to people from Toronto and beyond.

TO DO 15 Opening Party

Festival week starts on Monday, but kick-it-off mid-week at the TO DO Opening Party at SMASH (2880 Dundas St W) in the Junction. Come and find out what the Festival is about, meet local designers, experience featured installations, and dance with the amazing community that makes this Festival happen. Live music by Das Hussy. Featured installation by LeuWebb Projects and live mural by Ben Johnston.
