Junction Tree Refuses To Die

The magic and majesty of trees…and speaking of trees that refuse to die here is one from my neighbourhood that is going to get another chance from one of Toronto’s top arborists (seen through the leaves)…it is a Japanese Plum and quite rare for these parts...

Sisters on the Planet Action Guide
Four inspirational women and the fight against climate change

Climate change is already having a disproportionate impact on poor people in the US and abroad, and it's hitting women hardest.

These are stories of inspiration, of hope, and of the power of people to bring about change. Sahena, Sharon, Muriel, and Martina might have very different lives, but what they share is a certainty that progress only comes about when you stand up and make your voice heard.

Summer is the busiest time of the year in the Junction.
If you are interested in upcoming events that take place in the neighbourhood, be sure to check out online the Junction Residents Association events calendar.
Hi, please see below for an announcement from the Cultural Committee.

There are also a slew of events listed on the calendar at www.junctionra.ca including events this weekend like the *Junction Tree Tour, Community Potluck in Vine Parkette and free screening of "Garbage: The Revolution Starts at Home"*.

You'll also find various discussions and groups focused on our community's development, families, and issues of the day. Or start your own discussions and meet other community-minded members of the Junction...

"Neil Ross has called a summer meeting for anyone who is around and interested, primarily to help plan the spring fling event involving students and the community. Grant applications will be due starting mid-August, and there are lots of great ideas to discuss in order to come up with a concrete plan. The more artist involvement, the better! This will be the primary focus of the summer meeting of the Cultural Committee will be the planning of the Spring Fling involving students and community. Grant applications will be due starting mid-August, and there are lots of great ideas to discuss in order to come up with a concrete plan. The more artist involvement, the better! There is also considerable interest coming out of the last JRA general meeting in pursuing designation as a Heritage Conservation District. We’ll talk about how to move forward with this, in conjunction with the Historical Society. Perhaps a new committee will be created to take on this very important endeavour. The meeting will be Tues, Aug 4 at 7:30 at Wise Daughters. We realize many people may be away, but please let me know if you can attend. Please forward this invitation to anyone else who might be interested. September 17 we’ll be sharing more information and soliciting membership in this committee at the regular JRA meeting as well."

Thanks,

Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home

When: Saturday, July 25 at 6:00 pm

Where: Margret
2952 Dundas Street West, Toronto ON
(just E of Pacific)

"Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home"
This film is a feature documentary that describes how an average North American family impacts the environment through their production of garbage.

After his son's birth, Andrew Nisker (writer and director) felt compelled to examine the average urban family's relationship with waste. The film documents the McDonald family's experience after they agree to keep every scrap of garbage that they create for three months. Nisker then takes them (and us) to find out where it all goes and what it's doing to the world.

From the website: "Everyday life under a microscope has never been so revealing. By the end of this trashy odyssey, you are truly inspired to revolutionize your lifestyle for the sake of future generations." http://www.garbagerevolution.com/

This timely 75 minute film will be followed by lively discussion. Refreshments are available for purchase.

Hope to see you there!

Just to remind you

The 2008 Green Village is Home Green Home at Junction Arts Festival

The entire festival runs on Bullfrog Power: 100% green electricity

Toronto, ON, August 26, 2008
- The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural extravaganza like no other and HOME GREEN HOME is the theme for the second annual Green Village, which takes place during the weekend street closure on Saturday, September 6 (12:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 7 (11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.).

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival, which practices and encourages reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire festival location, is set to throw the party of the year as the Junction celebrates its centennial of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908.

The second annual Green Village, presented also for the second year by Bombardier Inc., is back bigger than before and will demonstrate and inspire positive methods of how to incorporate green conscious living into everyone's home and lifestyle.

Starting at the east end of the Dundas West festival footprint (Keele Street entrance), a number of environmental organizations, guest speakers and community groups will present information, daily lectures, workshops and demonstrations on ways to reduce your ecological footprint. Save money with eco- renovations and ways to reduce energy consumption, discover government programs, alternative energy sources, city planning initiatives and more.

Councillor Bill Saundercook (Ward 13, City of Toronto) and JFAC Chair states, "We are proud to have Bombardier Inc. back at this year's Junction Arts Festival as our Green Village sponsor. The Green Village goal is to motivate festival visitors and cultivate interaction through knowledge, discovery and participation with environmental concerns, and we applaud all participating groups and organizations."

Junction business owner Martin Scott of Forever Interiors states, "This year at the Junction Arts Festival we embrace creativity in the ways in which we focus on the concerns of the environment. Join us in the second annual Green Village as we artfully help you solve the needs of your environment - your home. Home Green Home."

Equally as important, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival proudly announces it will be 'Bullfrogpowered' with 100% green electricity.

'Bullfrogpowered' means that Bullfrog Power will inject carbon-free green power onto the Ontario electricity grid to match the amount of electricity used by the Junction Arts Festival. Bullfrog's green power is sourced exclusively from wind power and low-impact hydro producers who meet or exceed the federal government's EcoLogoM standard for renewable energy.

Choosing green, carbon-free power is an easy way for homes, businesses and organizations to help fight climate change and create a healthier environment for future generations. Visit Bullfrog Power on the web at www.bullfrogpower.com.

Additionally, a new special feature of the 2008 Green Village is
the Junction Tree Tour (meeting on the N.W. corner of Keele Street and Dundas Street West, Sunday September 7 at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.), which will be presented by Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).

Join LEAF arborist Todd Irvine as he explores the Junction neighbourhood to uncover both historic and newly planted native trees. From back streets to grand boulevards, the Junction is home to a diverse array of trees including the rare black oak often associated with High Park and a honey-locust with a vigorous, arching canopy that is 60 feet across.

The tour will also feature the personal story of one resident who has turned her front yard into a 'monarch feeding station' by packing it full of native trees, shrubs and prairie plants.

Call to Artists Toronto Junction Arts Festival 2008: Green Village

Call to Artists: The Junction Arts Festival: September 3-7, 2008The Junction Arts Festival - September 3 to 7, 2008
Snapshot: junctonartsfest.com Call to Artists

This year the Junction is celebrating its 100th anniversary marking its incorporation as West Toronto in 1908. Celebrations are being planned all year, but none as big as the annual Junction Arts Festival.

Our aim is to organize the artistic line-up keeping in mind, but not limited to, the festival theme – Historic Mind / Modern Eye. At a time when we are celebrating the Junction's past we do so with one eye on the present and one on the future. The interpretations, visions, stories, hopes and dreams presented will transform this theme into a reality and help define who we are. The Junction.

We are currently accepting applications for the following categories -
Juried Visual Art Exhibit; Street Performing Artists; Art Installations;
KIDZone/Junction Community Stage; Writers and Readings; and Music
.

Get your application at www.junctionartsfest.com
