A weekend festival 'Where the Arts meet the Street' in the heart of the West Toronto Junction is the basis for this ever-growing multi-ARTS Festival that includes visual art, galleries, installation art, main stage music, dance, theatre, performance art, travelling minstrels and anything in between and beyond.

Junction Arts Festival – September 8 to 12

With summer coming to an end the Junction arts community is preparing to welcome thousands of people to our great neighbourhood for this years Junction Arts Festival.

The Junction Forum for Art & Culture (JFAC) is moving away from the street festivals of the past few years and returning to its origins with a "thousand percent increase in art". The out of town street vendors which lined Dundas last year will be replaced with art installations, performance art, entertainment for the kids and extended patios from our favourite local restaurants. Our local business and storefronts will no longer be hidden behind tents so they can also enjoy and benefit from the festival.

Traffic will be closed this year on Dundas from Runnymede to Annette Street with Keele being the only north/south route. See below for closure times.

Art installation will start at Malta Park with an outdoor living room and continue to the vacant lot on Indian Grove which will stage the Poetry Village and Film Centre.

JRA presents the Community Stage at High Park Avenue

The stage is sponsored by your Junction Residents Association and we will be hosting a Community Forum on local issues as well as promoting local talent in the multi-talented Junction.

Junction Community Forum – 11am Saturday and 1pm Sunday

Your JRA is hosting a Junction Community Forum on the Community Stage on High Park Ave.

We are inviting leaders from other nearby resident associations to take part in a question and answer discussion on local topics. This is a great opportunity for residents to inquire about and comment on a wide range of issues.

Junction News Team - Saturday and Sunday

Hannah Hogan and Matt McCready are improv reporters covering the festival and bringing back weird and wonderful characters. Hannah and Matt will also be starring in our popular "Artists Who Didn’t Make the Cut" segment (watch for the creator of the installation that actually sprayed sausages!). Plus prizes, contests, trivia, special guests, and extremely silly bits.

Junction History Mash Up, 2pm Saturday, 3pm Sunday

An encore presentation of the dynamic experience that made its debut at the Humberside Hoopla in June. A troupe of student actors -- originally from Heather Bernkopf’s Grade 11 drama class at Humberside, now bursting into Grade Twelve – interpret Junction Suite, an original orchestral composition by young composer Isaias Garcia based on the wide open and diverse history of West Toronto Junction. Narration by Neil Ross. Produced by Boom Times Cabaret Artists Collective.

EnvironMENTAL Junction Revue, 3:45 Saturday, 4:30 Sunday

Summer Standup/Sketch Comedy Workshop grads present a look askance at the environment and the rest of the world.

With Sarah Bradley on “Helicopter Parenting, Junction style”; Rebecca Christensen, Queen of Cats and Uni-tasking, Rick Mamros on “The 25 year Marriage: a Survivor’s Guide”, Terry McGuire on “smart cars, blue boxes and feuding families”, Zena Muzzell: talking to trees and Mal-Wart customers indiscriminately, and Teresa Owen with a whole new take on Golfing for the Environment. Special guest on the Sunday Show, ZAN COY, CTV hit Dan for Mayor. With special prizes including the first issue of the new five part graphic novel, Justice in the Junction, the Life and Times of Josiah Royce, story by Neil Ross, art by Brendan FitzPatrick. Proceeds to the West Toronto Junction Historical Society.

The 2010 Junction Arts Festival Call to Artists

The more time an artist has to create, make, develop and plan even mull over a work of art the greater the depth and the value to the viewer can be. The festival board wants to begin working with artists earlier, provide acceptance of work into the festival, so artists can plan and execute works on a longer term.

2010 Call To Artists

The Junction Arts Festival is now accepting creative proposals for the 2010 Junction Arts Festival. The Festival runs from September 8 to 12, 2010 with a two-day street closure of Dundas Street West, September 11 and 12.

The Festival is currently accepting proposals only from performance-based artists and art installation works of any combination, including but not limited to, Indoor and Outdoor Installation Artists, Street Dance and Theatre groups as well as any multi-arts ideas that we may be able to support. Our emphasis in 2010 will be for large scale outdoor work but we are accepting all proposals. Fees will be determined on a per-artist-basis.

Additional calls for Visual Artists, Poets and Musicians will be forthcoming in the next few months.

Approximately 200,000 people attend the festival each year, experiencing interactive works that both engage and enthrall.

Proposals should include the following:

• Artist or group contact info
• Bio and history
• Example of past work
• Video and/or photo examples of proposed work. If proposing a new work, please include a description, plus technical requirements

If proposing a new work please be as specific as your present process allows at this time. Also inform us if you are applying for any creative funding from other sources. If applications for government funding precede any agreement between artist and festival, then a letter of intent may be issued on our part.

The Junction Arts Festival has been running its present programming since 2007, but the festival’s history dates back to 1991, with the street closure since 2000. ‘Where the Arts meet the Street’ is the basis for this ever-growing multi-arts Festival that includes visual art, galleries, installation art, main stage music, dance, theatre, performance art, travelling minstrels and anything in between and beyond.

Weaving Mosaics: A creative adventure of vast proportions; September 9 to 13, 2009

Toronto, ON, July 21, 2009 - Like a mosaic, the 2009 Junction Arts Festival (produced by the Junction Forum for Art and Culture, JFAC) will weave a multitude of eclectic cultural and artistic elements together to create one big celebration; September 9 to 13 in Toronto's west-end Junction neighbourhood.

Now in its 17th year and attracting 200,000 visitors in 2008, the Junction Arts Festival takes place along one kilometre of Dundas Street West between Keele Street and Quebec Avenue, and features five days of unique artistry and innovation presented in many unusual ways; Visual Art Exhibits (September 9 to 13), Live Music Concerts (September 11 and 12), and the Street Performance Artists, Literary Artists, KidZone, Green Village and the Artisan/Vendor Market (happen during the weekend street closure on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13).
The Junction City Square at 2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue is the epicentre to all activities. Its train platform (specially built for the 2008 Junction Centennial, based on the CPR train station that once stood at Annette and Dupont) acts as the main stage this year, where, as a festival highlight, Junction native, acclaimed singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge will present a special evening of music with invited guests (Saturday, September 12 at 9:00 p.m., guests TBA).
JFAC Chair Councillor Bill Saundercook (Ward 13, City of Toronto) states, "It is the Junction Forum for Art and Culture's honour to present the very successful annual Junction Arts Festival, on behalf of the entire Junction community. This year, while we integrate a variety of extraordinary artists from many sources, we also continue to showcase the incredible pool of talent and creative brilliance available to us in our own neighbourhood."

Escapade of discoveries:

• Visual Art Exhibits: The 2009 Juried Art Exhibit will showcase this year's 75 entrants at the Academy of Realist Art (2968 Dundas St. W.), plus established and impromptu galleries along Dundas West present additional artists for the full five days (Sept. 9 to 13).
  Visual highlights also include many extraordinary installation artists such as Robert Hilts and Reid English; placed in outdoor and indoor locations during the weekend street closure (Sept. 12 & 13).
• Live Music Concerts: The Junction City Square's train platform (the Main Stage) will host two nights of live music performances; Afrobeat band Mr. Something Something headlines the Friday evening concert (Sept. 11) and Americana troubadour Justin Rutledge and friends headlines the Saturday evening show (Sept. 12).
• Street Performance Artists: There will be dance, theatre, live painting, music and comedy performers winding there way in and out of Dundas West shops and buildings (Sept. 12 & 13).
  Highlights include festival faves Toronto comedy duo Bain & Bernard (second year), and dance troupe r.a.d. (random acts of dance) return for the third time.
  Additionally, many travelling minstrels (soloists or groups) will strum and hum in unanticipated settings along Dundas West.
• Literary Artists: Back for the second year with an increased presence and sponsored for the first time by Junction publishing company BookThug (http://www.bookthug.ca/), the literary component will feature over 20 writers and poets, who will present public readings in unusual and experimental ways; including using megaphones from rooftops and roaming paperboys (Sept. 12 & 13).
• The KidZone: Centrally located for 2009 on Pacific Avenue at Dundas West, the KidZone is a fun zone featuring family-friendly arts, painting and interactive design workshops, a giant slide, a jumping castle, a sports complex and more (Sept. 12 & 13).
• The Green Village: Leading the march of the third annual Green Village participants is the green conscious, bicycle powered Afrobeat band Mr. Something Something, who encourages audience cooperation to demonstrate their pedal powered sound system, the SoundCycle.
  The area also presents materials, talks and workshops on environmental initiatives (Sept. 12 & 13).
  The Junction Arts Festival practices reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire location.
• Artisan/Vendor Market: Creative types, artisans and yummy food and drink vendors make for interesting and fun weekend shopping (Sept. 12 & 13).
• The Junction City Square: It's the spot for the weekend beer tent, the Main Stage evening concerts and the weekend daily community group performances and more (2960 Dundas St. W.).

Toronto’s one-of-a-kind arts fest takes over Dundas West, September 9 to 13

Toronto, ON, June 18, 2009 – The Junction Arts Festival, produced by the Junction Forum for Art and Culture, remains true to its name presenting five free days of eclectic culture and a multitude of unique dance, visual, literary and musical arts in many different forms; September 9 – 13, 2009 along Dundas Street West between Keele Street and Quebec Avenue (weekend street closure, September 12 and 13).

Creative producer Michael Menegon states, "The festival and the Junction’s roots are based in artistry, innovation and that ‘certain something’, that can only be found by being there. This year, we will weave a mosaic of extraordinarily creative discoveries throughout the Junction and showcase our incomparable neighbourhood."

The adventure will feature an all Canadian artist line-up, and proud Junction native singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge is collaborating with the festival creative producer as host/programmer of a special evening of musical celebration (exact date and more details TBA).

GET DOWN TO IT:

• The Junction City Square: At Dundas Street West and Pacific Avenue, it is the centre to the five-day celebration, the spot for the weekend beer tent and the place to find the train platform (specially built for the 2008 Junction Centennial); the 2009 Main Stage.
• Visual Arts: A festival foundation, the Juried Art Exhibit and Junction and impromptu galleries along Dundas West go for the full five days. The new Artist Laneway, featuring visual, sculpture and installation artistry, will be there to discover (during weekend street closure only, Sept. 12 & 13).
• Musical Arts: The Junction City Square’s train platform will act as the Main Stage for live music and headlining performances (dates TBA). Musicians will also play in unexpected settings in local shops (Sept. 12 & 13).
• Literary Arts: Back for the second year with an increased presence, the literary component will feature writers and poets in unusual venues and experimental ways; sponsored by Junction publishing company BookThug, www.bookthug.ca (Sept. 12 & 13).

• The Green Village: The third annual Green Village is a specific area during the weekend street closure presenting materials, speakers and workshops on environmental initiatives such as building green, painting green and rooftop gardens (Sept. 12 & 13).

at the 2008 JUNCTION ARTS FESTIVAL

Welcome the Art Gallery of Ontario

Toronto, ON, August 20, 2008 – The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural extravaganza like no other and the KIDZONE, taking place during the weekend Dundas Street West street closure on Saturday, September 6 (12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 7 (11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.), encourages participation and creation and is interactive, entertaining and engaging for the entire family.

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival, which practices and encourages reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire festival location, is set to throw the party of the year as the Junction celebrates its centennial of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908.

The KIDZONE (supported by Scotia Bank of Canada), located at the west end of the Dundas West festival footprint (Quebec Avenue entrance), will present free daily workshops, demonstrations and performances featuring activities in the visual arts, movement, music, film, martial arts and more including the Art Gallery of Ontario (brand new to the festival this year), the National Film Board of Canada Mediatheque, the Academy of Realist Art and the Junction community stage.
There is no registration required for all workshops.

States Junction Arts Festival Executive Director Michael Menegon, "We’re parents ourselves, so we created a KIDZONE that we think parents want to bring their children to; a place where kids can use their imaginations, get physical and learn about their community. And it’s free!"

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) will present their Community Home Mural program and Home Button Project in the AGO tent (Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.).
Join the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Gallery School in creating a mural celebrating home and inspired by the Junction Arts Festival, and draw or write what home means to you and then make it into a button! Learn about the new AGO, win tickets to visit and talk to our 'AGO is A GO' community ambassadors.

The National Film Board of Canada Mediatheque (NFB) will present their Get Animated workshop at the NFB Family Animation Station (Saturday and Sunday, 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.).

Participants will bring their ideas to life using simple animation tools and techniques and learn about the world of animation filmmaking, exciting animation films and activities. Use your hands and try out fun animation tricks, games and more with your family and the NFB animation workshop team.

The Academy of Realist Art (ARA) will present Kids Art Lessons at the Academy of Realist Art tent (Saturday, 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.).

ARA Instructor Diliana Popova will teach the children and teens who would like to begin developing their artistic skills. Participants are introduced to a variety of mediums and techniques through educational and fun projects including portrait drawing, painting with pastels and watercolours.

Toronto, ON, August 18, 2008 – The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural explosion second to none and the outdoor dance and street performances will burst to life during the weekend street closure on Saturday, September 6 (12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 7 (11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.).

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival is set to throw the party of the year as the Junction celebrates its centennial of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908.

Throughout the one kilometre festival footprint on Dundas Street West (between Keele Street and Quebec Avenue), local and national dance groups, specializing in street performance, will present site-specific, random and roaming flash performances, contemporary interpretive pieces, street theatre pieces, performance art pieces and improvisational ensemble pieces spontaneously animating the Junction Arts Festival streetscape.

Former artistic director of fFIDA International Dance Festival (16 years) and Junction Arts Festival executive producer Michael Menegon states, "The one thing that people have repeatedly talked about and was hugely popular from last year's festival were the dance street performances. So, for 2008 we're bringing back some of last year's groups and adding some new ones; all specializing in street performing. They will transform the street into a carnival of surprises and everyone loves a surprise!"

Ten ensemble companies from Toronto and provinces including Alberta and Nova Scotia will showcase unique performances.

ASM Dance founded by Jasmyn Fyffe presents a piece which explores the meaning and idea of materialism and addresses the societal norms and behaviours associated with the obsession of material things. Using contemporary movement, text/poetry and songs the idea of obsession and possession over material goods is displayed.

Bain & Bernard; a high-energy vaudevillian duo perform a comedy sketch. Drop by their wooden wonder cart and sample their “This Thing, That Thing, Everything Anything Elixir”.

Jay9 Dance Projects present the amazing automatons in “Wound About”, where life-sized wind-up toys come to life and dance around when audience members are invited to wind them up.

The Larchaud Dance Project will succeed once again in astounding all with their extreme physicality and unstoppable presence imagining what would happen if individuals of the punk movement were to travel back in time to influence the future and formation of society.

"NAGBOT", described as beat impromptu and superheroes of rhythm, have united into one tribe and will make their way as nomads across the universe taking over one street corner at a time.

Octamerous uses a group choreographic process and presents a site-specific installment entitled "Everything Ordinary", in which a group of strangers arrive in an alien culture and must learn how to make their way in this new environment.

Prairie Sky presents "Lucy’s Living Room", which is structured improvisation and a choreographer’s play with words, based around the central idea of urban green space and inspired by a game of Boggle.

r.a.d continue to create relationships with those who are not usually exposed to dance and will perform "Any Woman, Any Time" (four different comical vignettes), which will serve a taste of female etiquette and its evolution over the past century.

The Toronto Aerial Dance will present "Century"; a performance art piece retelling the story of the Junction Triangle in Toronto. Inspiring aerial choreography is woven with innovative modern dance to a back drop of projected images and original visual arts depicting the region.

Veronique Mackenzie’s "Citizens", inspired by the flash mobbing phenomena, will gather in an undetermined location perform some brief action, and then quickly disperse. As quickly as people realize there is something going on, the performance will have scattered only to reappear somewhere else.

The Historic City: A New Zone Celebrating the Junction's Centennial at the 2008 Junction Arts Festival

Happy 100th to the Junction!

Toronto, ON, August 27, 2008 - The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural extravaganza like no other and the Historic City is a new area at the 16th annual festival (taking place during the weekend street closure on Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7), which will honour the 100th anniversary of the Junction officially becoming the City of West Toronto by the Province of Ontario in 1908.

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival, which practices reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire festival location, is set to throw the largest party of the Junction's centennial year as the area remembers its significant history and looks forward to the future.

The Historic City, located at High Park Avenue and Dundas Street West (Saturday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.), will feature fun events for the entire family and will present live stage performances including Boom Times Cabaret - Heart of the Junction Talk Show (with local actor/historian Neil Ross as Junction journalist A. B. Rice) and guitar and banjo duo Doin' Time, plus West Toronto Junction Historical Society walking tours, archival photo exhibits, turn-of-the-century children's games, photo opportunities in period costume, vintage fire and police vehicles and the Toronto Aerial Dance Company will present "Century"; a performance art piece.

Councillor Bill Saundercook (Ward 13, City of Toronto) and JFAC Chair states, "The Junction has an incredible past, which has had an undeniable influence on the area's vibrant present. It has been the Junction Forum for Art & Culture's (JFAC) honour to have presented the year long centennial celebrations in the Junction, on behalf of the Junction BIA and all of its residents."

West Toronto Junction Historical Society centennial committee chair Neil Ross states, "The Historic City is a true merging of story and place. The new zone is situated beside the old Avenue Hotel and behind is the track of the old Carlton Race Course (location of the first Queen's Plate). It is an interactive, informative musical comic dialogue, which may give us a rollicking insight into the Junction's future."

On the Historic City stage (September 6 and 7 at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.), the Boom Times Cabaret - Heart of the Junction Talk Show will take to the stage for six performances with host Neil Ross as Junction journalist A. B. Rice, Samantha Martin as Dr. Minerva Reid (the first lady of medicine) and the Boom Times Band. Their guests are a cavalcade of historical, contemporary and musical originals.

The Cabaret audience will be up close and personal with the 'Legends of the Junction'; the conmen, lawmen, musicians, politicians and scribes who built "Junction City" will come alive. Discover the Junction's railway roots; sample its breathtaking diversity of culture and character in a monologue, interviews, sketch and song.

Doin' Time (also on the Historic City stage on Saturday, September 6 only, at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.), featuring "Five Fingers Pete" and "Ramblin' Reg" now crisscross the country on their musical road to redemption atoning for passed indiscretions by singin' and playin' rather than coning and cheating.

The West Toronto Junction Historical Society (WTJHS) will invite visitors to experience "Junction City" through the eyes of the men and women who built it. The Society will present the 'Legends of the Junction Walking Tours', which will leave from the WTJHS booth at the Historic City (Saturday, September 6 at 11:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 7 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.) and proceed back in time to rendezvous with historical characters enroute, who will give participants a first hand account of their lives and times in the thriving railway town.

The Toronto Aerial Dance Company is extremely proud to be presenting "Century"; a performance art piece retelling the story of the Junction Triangle in Toronto (Sunday, September 7 only, at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.) at the Historic City area.

Inspiring aerial choreography is woven with innovative modern dance, to a back drop of projected images and original visual arts depicting the region. "Century" will retrace the steps of three transformative eras: The ongoing consolidation of an integrated community, the expansion of urbanization and finally, the first sparks of industry.

A live visual artist will paint onstage, creating improvisational pieces in response to each era, representing the ongoing history, growth and diversity of the area. Recorded music will be accompanied by live instrumentation.

Toronto, ON, August 26, 2008 - The Junction Arts Festival (September 3 to 7, 2008 in Toronto), produced by the Junction Forum for Art & Culture, presents a cultural extravaganza like no other and HOME GREEN HOME is the theme for the second annual Green Village, which takes place during the weekend street closure on Saturday, September 6 (12:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 7 (11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.).

Now attracting 150,000 visitors annually, the 2008 Junction Arts Festival, which practices and encourages reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the entire festival location, is set to throw the party of the year as the Junction celebrates its centennial of becoming the City of West Toronto in 1908.

The second annual Green Village, presented also for the second year by Bombardier Inc., is back bigger than before and will demonstrate and inspire positive methods of how to incorporate green conscious living into everyone's home and lifestyle.

Starting at the east end of the Dundas West festival footprint (Keele Street entrance), a number of environmental organizations, guest speakers and community groups will present information, daily lectures, workshops and demonstrations on ways to reduce your ecological footprint.
