After playing to sold-out houses in May 2015, this one-of-a kind experiment in multilingual theatre is back!

“In Sundry Languages” strings together a series of outrageously comical vignettes about the unexpected discoveries that come with living, laughing and crying in a second language. Languages used and abused: various dialects of Mandarin, Farsi, Russian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese among many others. Translation: none!

It’s a perfect theatre outing for both native speakers of English and English language learners.

"In Sundry Languages": Investigating the phenomenon of multilingual acting

Is stage multilingualism possible? Do we always yearn for translation? How different are multilingual actors from monolingual actors? How does a multilingual and multicultural audience react to a multilingual production?

In Sundry Languages is a new theatre experiment conducted by the Toronto Laboratory Theatre with a group of professional, semi-professional and relentlessly unprofessional actors performing in their dominant and non-dominant languages.

The stories told on the stage are the stories of immigration, displacement, hybrid identities, constant learning and unlearning.

Languages used and abused: various dialects of Mandarin, Farsi, Russian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Esperanto among many others.

Translation used: none. It is a theatrical and linguistic adventure like no other.

First stage of experimentation: March-June 2015

Second stage of experimentation: October 2015-March 2016

Science and art often have a perceived divide in contemporary culture, yet historically their roots stem from similar manifestations of creativity and aesthetics, in exploring, responding to and explaining Nature. This panel presentation brings together scientists, artists and those with a foot in each of the ‘two cultures’ to discuss their interdisciplinary practices, and encourage novel ways to understand the world around us.

Robin Kingsburgh will discuss the teaching of science to art and design students, and the value of incorporating art making into the teaching of science. Creatively rendering a scientific idea facilitates understanding, and provides an alternate way for an artist to learn about science. This science/art making practice deepens students’ understanding of the topic at hand, as the choice of how to render an idea visually greatly clarifies thought, and encourages abstract and metaphorical thinking. Art created can be displayed to the community, and provide a bridge into scientific concepts for the general public. Robin will show recent work from her students at OCAD University.

Stephen Morris works in experimental non-linear physics, and will discuss self-organized, emergent patterns and textures. These shapes emerge spontaneously from a dynamic process of growing, folding, cracking, wrinkling, branching, flowing and other kinds of morphological development. His work is informed by the scientific aesthetic of nonlinear physics. Stephen’s stunning visual images draw upon both laboratory physics experiments and Nature; his work celebrates the subtle interplay of order and complexity in emergent patterns.

Lisa Carrie Goldberg is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her artwork often takes the form of full-sensory installations that examine the realm of art and science, including topics in sleep science, tissue culture, physiology and molecular biology. Lisa will discuss her recent work as Director of Action Potential Lab, Toronto’s first laboratory dedicated to merging science and art. Based on a collaborative learning-teaching model, Action Potential Lab provides opportunities for children and adults to experience true interdisciplinarity, engaging in creative projects designed to merge art and science, and encourage novel ways of understanding the world around us.

Ian Clarke will guide the panellists through a moderated discussion, which touches upon issues of commonality and difference in art and science, including: the creative process; the role of aesthetics; the importance of interdisciplinarity; and the role or visualization in art and science.

Three images of Salome are portrayed in this play: tragic, comic, and the one, which exists on "other side of good and evil". The birth of Salome as a theatrical figure, her existence and her death are at the centre of the action. Three different images of Salome are the masks, which are situated in the polemics with each other, and result in revealing of the character’s essence.

The Theater Laboratory of Vadim Maksimov (TL) was founded in Saint-Petersburg, Russia in 1984. The object of TL’s activity is experimental research in field of drama: European dramatic symbolism, Russian futurism, Oriental synthetic theater, Antonin Artaud’s “Théâtre de cruauté”. Since 1996 TL has followed directly in the development of Antonin Artaud’s dramatic theory.
The actors of TL take specific training, which was developed in TL in the course of the last 8 years. The training includes oriental practice of psychophysical self-regulation. It is based on the Artaud’s idea of human’s body “energy centres”. Every centre contains a set of senses and can be expressed in the form of plastic motions and voices. The specific training helps to escape from the everyday mask.
The main principle of TL’s performances is a rhythmic and psychoenergetic act organization, an integration of voice, gesture and word into a united impulse, which could completely affect on audience’s perception.
To date, Theater Laboratory has produced about twenty plays including world classical ones (Sophocles “Antigona”, Oscar Wild “Salome”, August Strindberg “The Dream Play”, Euripides/I. Brodsky “Medea”) and plays on modern European dramaturgy (“Fosse/Frostenson/Fragments”, Milorad Pavich “Party”). Some of the plays have never been performed in Russia before (Igor Terentev “Giordano Bruno”, Antonin Artaud “Samurai or ...”, Dzeami Motokie “Kagekie”, Jean Gene “Elle”, William Batler Yeats “Only jealousy of Emer”).

This event is a part of the International Education Week November 12th to 16th, 2007 at the International Student Centre (ISC) at the University of Toronto.
