September Events and Workshops at Wise Daughters' Craft Market
There’s something happening here...
Taking stock of how this adventure has played out over its first 8 months, I am quite amazed by just how much creative activity there has been at the shop. Wise Daughters has built up a talented roster of local artists, craftspeople and workshop instructors. There are now about 50 artists supplying the shop!
We’ve had workshops on everything from quilling and journaling to felt sculpture, mosaics, bookbinding and storytelling. There are lots of new offerings coming up this fall, plus the return of our most popular workshops.
I’m thrilled by how many repeat customers attend, but also by how the workshops attract such a diversity of participants from all over the GTA and beyond. Mums and sons, dads and daughters, friends and strangers – each expressing their individuality through art and crafts. Keep checking the website for new workshop listings for fall.
The summer kids’ camps have inspired more programming for children and families, and I look forward to all that youthful exuberance and artistic inhibition. Coming later this fall... crafting just for boys and parent/child craft sessions. And for the young at heart, arts & crafts "camp" for grown-ups.

Russian Branch of Antonin Artaud's Theatre in Toronto: "Voluspa" & "A Hunt For a Sweet Little Deer", August 29, September 6-7
Dear friends,
Now we have here in Toronto for a very short time one of the most unorthodox Russian theatre directors, Vadim Maksimov, the professor of Theatre Arts at St. Petersburg State Theatre Academy (Russia), the Chair of "Western Theatre" department of this Academy, scientist concentrating on Antonin Artaud's theatre and a practicing theatre director who has his own style within the "Artaud theatre" concept.
In 1984 for such practicing he established an experimental "Theatre Laboratory" (Teatral’naiia Laboratoriia), which productions prepare and run constantly.
This week Maksimov’s "Laboratory" gives just only one performance of his "Voluspa" production (aka "The Prophecy of Violva") in Toronto, which completely demonstrates the mentioned above style of Maksimov; a piece taken from the early medieval German epos (The Elder Edda). In September he takes this production to the Mont-Laurier International Theatre Festival in Quebec.
BELOW SEE THE DETAILS ON THIS PRODUCTION IN TORONTO.
There’s also a certain experiment that Vadim Maksimov and I conduct and for which he came to Toronto. Specifically, Maksimov will apply his methods of directing to stage my play "Melody Ranch Escape or A Hunt For A Sweet Little Deer", which I wrote in such a way that its non-traditional context is hidden, so that on the surface it looks very traditional. Maksimov noticed this and in his staging he wants to achieve similar effect: on the surface - relatively traditional methods, while in essence he will merge it with the "Artaud theatre" concept.
BELOW SEE THE DETAILS ON THIS PRODUCTION IN TORONTO.
Both productions are in Russian, but for such kind of theatre this seems not relevant, plus, we will provide a very helpful synopsis for each performance (for “Voluspa” the description of characters in program completely reveals the story; for “A Hunt…” we give a synopsis for each scene).
We will be happy if you come to just enjoy and/or to judge this work. We will appreciate any criticism.
HERE ARE THE PRODUCTION RUN DETAILS:

17th ANNUAL JUNCTION ARTS FESTIVAL:
They'll shout it from the rooftops, they'll stop you in the street; authors, poets, writers and readers challenge you to become a member of the "BookThug Nation", September 12 and 13
Toronto, ON, August 26, 2009 - The Junction Arts Festival (September 9 - 13, 2009) presents a mosaic of unique visual, dance, musical and literary arts, and independent Junction publisher BookThug seeks new recruits for its literary nation; writers and readers share and recite their work in unexpected and unusual ways (daily throughout the weekend street closure, Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.).
BookThug founder Jay MillAr states, "It's easy to be a citizen of the 'BookThug Nation': just be curious! We at BookThug are aware that our books are not for just anybody. So why not become somebody? Poetry, visual literature, conceptual literature, translation, the lyric, critical texts and fiction; each one is distinctly BookThug."
During the weekend only, BookThug (2009 Junction Arts Festival literary sponsor) is looking for new citizens to join the "BookThug Nation". Over 20 authors, poets, writers and readers present their work from many angles.
They broadcast it from rooftops, perform it in the street, interrupt everyday conversations and challenge festival attendees to consider poetry and literature as part of their lives.
The "BookThug Nation" presents three literary street components:
- Roaming Readers: Poetry read to you one on one by the author or by a BookThug youth.
- Battling Bards: Look up, look way up. Poets battle it out (call and response style) with megaphones from rooftops and window sills.
- Resting Readers: For traditionalists, there are four readings a day by various BookThug writers; on the back patio of the Troubadour bar (3071 Dundas St. W.). Schedule, TBA.

THE JUNCTION ARTS FESTIVAL:
Mr. Something Something headlines Friday concert "event", with special guest openers The Framework and graffiti artists Art Fuzion; September 11
Toronto, ON, August 24, 2009 - The 2009 Junction Arts Festival (September 9 - 13) weaves a mosaic of unique visual, dance, literary and musical arts, and afro-beat groovesters Mr. Something Something headline the free Friday concert, where new-wave rockers The Framework kick off the night and Art Fuzion draw free-style; September 11 at 8:00 p.m. on the outdoor main stage (Junction City Square, 2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue).
Junction Arts Festival creative producer Michael Menegon states, "This is a concert 'event' with two powerful bands, experimental video and Art Fuzion (a group of graffiti artists inspired by the music). Of course Mr. Something Something will be needing more than just bicycle power for this concert, but rest assured their SoundCycle will be out in force on Sunday as part of the festival's Green Village."
Mr. Something Something, Johan Hultqvist (vocals/shaker), John MacLean (tenor sax, clarinet, flute), Larry Graves (drums/percussion), Paul MacDougall (guitar), Liam Smith (bass) and Jennifer Dallas (dance), is reputed for its high-energy live shows, fusing African rhythm with jazz and pop. Their second album "The Edge" was nominated for a 2007 Juno Award, and they recently released their fourth recording "Shine Your Face" on June 3, 2009.
The band has played over 450 shows and their interactive performances have become a vehicle for their green initiatives. Concerned with sustainability issues and hopefully to inspire audience participation, Mr. Something Something invented Canada's first bicycle-powered sound system called the SoundCycle.
Synth-rock band The Framework, Ryan Isojima (vocals/guitar), Chris Graham (vocals/guitar), Rayanne Lepieszo (synths/vocals), Scott Winter (bass), Tobias Smith (drums), now celebrate the release of their self-produced full length debut album "Before Tonight" (distributed on Last Gang Records, August 4, 2009) and the video for the first single "Always Left Behind" is currently airing on MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic.
In 2008, Inside E Magazine honoured The Framework as one of the top five bands at the North by Northeast Music Festival and they won third place in the Virgin Festival's Road to V contest (selected by fans and industry judges including Virgin CEO Richard Branson).

About the Theatre
Teatralnaya Laboratoriya (The Theatre Lab) of Vadim Maksimov is the only theatre in Russia that works with using of Antonin Artaud’s system.
The theatre exists already 25 years. During this time Laboratoriya has produced more than 20 performances based on world classics as well as on modern European drama.
Director and founder of Laboratoriya is Professor of St. Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy Vadim Maksimov, expert in French theater.
The main principle of Laboratoriya’s performances is a rhythmic and psychoenergetic act of organization, an integration of voice, gesture and word into a unified impulse, which has a profound affect on the audience’s perceptions.

Media Release: Launching 'Let the Sneakers Walk Again' Charitable Campaign in Toronto
MEDIA INFORMATION - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
We Need Your Sneakers!
And Another 100,000 Canadians to Donate their Sneakers -
From the Bottom of Their Soles
Toronto, ON, August 19, 2009 - The situation in Haiti has recently gone from bad to worse and this international crisis requires our immediate attention and action. Inflation and socio-economic ills have propelled this impoverished nation into absolute poverty, and starvation, that has now reached epidemic proportions.
It isn't an exaggeration to say that in every Canadian household, there is at least one pair of sneakers in good condition that haven't been used in years.
Today, even trying to forage for food in piles of garbage is done barefoot, leading to widespread foot diseases that can result in amputation or even death.
In September 2009, we are launching Let the Sneakers Walk Again: A one-month charitable campaign in downtown Toronto.
We are counting on generous Torontonians, political dignitaries, corporate sponsors and their employees to donate a pair of sneakers so we can make great strides in providing desperately needed footwear to those that need it the most, in Haiti.
Fortunately, there are many committed citizens already working towards alleviating the suffering of destitute Haitian communities. In the small town of Val Thérèse, a 45-minute drive North of Sudbury, a small group of volunteers came together in 1991 from a grassroots level, and started Cercle Missionnaire de la Vallée. Headed by President Georgette Bergeron, over the past 18 years the group has organized shipments of goods to Port-au-Prince in excess of 50 tons, every single year. In Haiti at age 84, Soeur Thérèse l'Amoureux (m.c.r.), a Canadian nun from Montréal, receives the shipment of donations and is responsible for distribution to ensure thousands of Haitians obtain the basic necessities for survival.
By directing all contributions from Let The Sneakers Walk Again (LTSWA) campaign to their charity, we are determined to help Cercle Missionnaire de la Vallée expand their efforts in touching even more lives.
We invite the Toronto Police, Toronto Fire Department, City Council and all citizens of the city of Toronto - and our GTA neighbours - to donate their new or gently-used sneakers. Employees of corporations and mainstream media including Toronto Sun, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, as well as local ethnic media, will all be encouraged to participate by donating their sneakers too.
We Want You and all Torontonians to Donate Sneakers -
From the Bottom of Your Sole!

THE JUNCTION ARTS FESTIVAL:
The new "Red Hot Art Spots" AND visual artists light the 2009 Junction Arts Festival on fire
Toronto, ON, August 20, 2009 - The 17th annual Junction Arts Festival (September 9 - 13, 2009) presents a mosaic of unique visual, dance, literary and musical arts, and visual artists light the festival on fire, competing in the 2009 Juried Art Exhibit and showcasing in (and out) of the brand new 'Red Hot Art Spots'; from opening day on Wednesday, September 9 through to Sunday, September 13.
The 2009 Juried Art Exhibit takes place at the Academy of Realist Art (2968 Dundas Street West at Pacific), and new to the festival this year are the "Red Hot Art Spots", where many Junction businesses, shops, galleries and restaurants step up and provide venues and space for the visual artists (plus performance, readers/writers and music artists) to showcase their works.
Juried Art Committee and Junction Forum for Art and Culture board member Colleen Johnston states, "I am extremely excited at the number and the calibre of artists participating this year. This community based juried art exhibition is growing at an amazing rate year to year and 2009 looks to be one of the best; the judges are going to have a very difficult time choosing the winners."
72 visual artists are entered in the Juried Art Exhibit this year, including Kathleen Coyle, whose stained glass horse mosaic (called "Painted Pony") acts as the 2009 Junction Arts Festival logo.
The juried art pieces, submitted based on photography, sculpture or painting/drawing categories, will be judged by three Toronto professionals (Rhonda Nolan, Rhonda Noland Designs; Fernando Freitas, Academy of Realist Art and Felix Russo, Publisher, Editor PhotoEd Magazine) and the winners will be announced on September 9 at 9:00 p.m., during the opening night celebrations in the Junction City Square (2960 Dundas St. West at Pacific Ave.). The first prize is a one-year scholarship to the Academy of Realist Art ($7,500.00 value), and Picture it Framed is providing $5000.00 in framing for the subsequent awards.
NOTE: All juried artist names, images and biography information is available at www.junctionartsfest.com/new2009test/sites/juriedart.
The new "Red Hot Art Spots" represents the Junction community and festival coming together in true creative collaboration. The participating venues, within the festival footprint and a number of satellite sites, open their doors to provide unexpected indoor and outdoor settings for festival programmed visual artists (painters, photographers), which include seven installation artists such as Reid English (outdoor/Junction artist) and Aaron Mitchell (indoor/Toronto artist).
In addition to visual artists, the "Red Hot Art Spots" also host travelling minstrels, writers, poets, dancers or street performers; some venues also present their own entertainment.
NOTE: All venue scheduling and corresponding artist information is available at www.junctionartsfest.com/new2009test/sites/redhot/.

THE JUNCTION ARTS FESTIVAL:
Justin Rutledge concert, with Jason Collett & The Beauties, September 12, 2009
Toronto, ON, August 13, 2009 - The 17th annual Junction Arts Festival (September 9 - 13, 2009) presents a mosaic of unique visual, dance, literary and musical arts, where internationally renowned singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge plays headliner and host to a special night of rockin' country music, friends and live collaboration on Saturday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
The concert will feature specially invited guests Arts & Crafts recording artist Jason Collett and The Beauties, and will take place on the outdoor festival main stage in the Junction City Square (2960 Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue).
Proud Junction native Justin Rutledge states, "I've witnessed the Junction grow over the years into a community teeming with creative businesses and a vibrant cultural core. The Junction Arts Festival is, in my opinion, Toronto's best street fest. The great spirit of the festival represents the optimism and renewed energy of one of Toronto's oldest and greatest neighbourhoods. Please come celebrate it with us."
Juno nominated Rutledge, who has crafted three albums to critical acclaim; No Never Alone (2005), The Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park (2006) and Man Descending (2008), is equally famous for his mesmerizing live performances and will be supported by his band; Bazil Donovan (bass), David Baxter (guitar), Blake Manning (drums) and Burke Carroll (steel).
Jason Collett, whose sentimentality for songwriting and ability to capture daily life with his own classic poetic style, is an artist that Rutledge looks forward to performing with for the first time.
A key figure in Toronto's indie scene and a member of Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett recently released his newest solo album Here's To Being Here (2008), as the anticipated follow-up to 2005's critically acclaimed Idols of Exile.
Collett explains, "I feel this is a Rock 'n Roll music record. Rock 'n Roll music encompasses all sorts of influences - country, blues, gospel... all those things, and I'm just part of that tradition."
The Beauties are a group of prolific musicians made up of Darin McConnell, Jud Ruhl, Shawn Creamer, Paul Pfisterer, Derek Downham and The Bogoo, who, every Sunday night are the house band at Toronto's Dakota Tavern (a favourite hangout of Justin Rutledge) for a night of tar-kickin', twang-rockin', spirits and barn-dancin'.
Please Note: Further festival details and more artist announcements are coming soon.

Toronto West End Web -- Raising An Online Community
Toronto, ON, August 12 2009 - For the last two months, Junction-based design and marketing company Totally Spun has hosted networking events in the neighbourhood. In June a general meet-up of web savvy and web curious residents alike was held at Crema Coffee Co., and in July a meet-up of local artists interested in online organizing happened at Wise Daughters Craft Market. (Links to the recaps for each of these events are below)
On Wednesday August 19th from 10am-noon, the third monthly meet-up will happen at Gingerbread House Family Cafe (2790 Dundas Street West). This month's meet-up is geared toward the established online community of parents and family in the Junction. Breaking the tradition of evening meetings, this 10am-noon meet-up will give local parents and their kids -- who aren't always available after the dinner hour -- an opportunity to come out to a family friendly environment and talk about online organizing, web and social media.
Co-organizer of this month's event Irina from The Junction Parents Blog will share some of the successful efforts the established online parent community has used in the past to get it where it is today, leading to an open discussion of ideas for carrying forward that momentum. Totally Spun owner Paul Reynolds will be on hand to advise on specific technologies and services and to facilitate the event.
Parents and their kids from around the Junction and surrounding neighbourhoods are welcome, as well as non-parents interested in organizing families on our corner of the net or anyone wanting to learn from this community's successes so-far.

Call for Junction Artists and Businesses for Boom Times Spring Fling 2010!
CALL FOR JUNCTION ARTISTS AND BUSINESSES
FOR BOOM TIMES SPRING FLING 2010
Background
The Boom Times Spring Fling originated at the 2009 Amalgamation Celebration at Humberside Collegiate Institute, collaboration between Boom Times Cabaret, the Junction Historical Society, the Junction Residents Association, students, historians, artists, businesses and community groups. Building on its momentum, the Junction Residents’ Association’s new Cultural Committee is spearheading the coordination of a 2nd and bigger, more inclusive, multi-disciplinary event in 2010.
2010 Plans
There are two key components to the Spring Fling.
The JUNCTION HISTORY MASH-UP will offer a mix of modern and traditional storytelling techniques from native drums to video images, from mime to rap. This theatre piece will be researched, dramatized and performed by local high school students working collaboratively with local historians for performances in early June and at the arts festival in September.
The second element of Spring Fling involves local artists who will mentor secondary students, supported by local businesses, in consultation with local historians, to create original art which will be exhibited in storefronts in June and ideally right through next summer and into Junction Arts Festival week.
This multi-disciplinary visual arts piece of Boom Times Spring Fling is envisioned to include photography, textile art, sculpture, mapping, painting, cartooning and anything else our artist/student teams can imagine.
If you are a Junction-area artist, working in any one of a number of disciplines /media, and would like to mentor participating high school students, here is what you need to do:
- Send us your bio and tell us where you live (must be Junction, but boundaries are fluid)
- Share your idea for a student-driven arts project on the theme of Junction history and culture
- Tell us how you will mentor the creative process
- Include a budget for equipment/materials
- Find yourself a Junction-area business partner to exhibit the students’ work in June (and preferably through September, though logistical constraints may have to be accommodated)*
*If you have a business and want to get involved in the project but need an artist to partner with, we will help find you a match.
Here is what the overseeing JRA Cultural Committee/Boom Times Team will do:
- Apply for funding to cover artists’ fees, student honoraria, materials and promotion
- Match artist/business pairs with students from the participating high schools
- Provide historians to act as resource people, and access to the Junction archives
- Promote the activities and culminating exhibitions in the community
PLEASE APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE – FINAL DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 18 TO: culture@junctionra.ca

Latitude 44 Gallery: The Importance of Art in The Community
"... what makes the difference between art and nonart cannot be something that meets the eye."
'Art into life' by Arthur C. Danto
The Nation, Vol. 267, September 21, 1998
'Art into life' by Arthur C. Danto
The Nation, Vol. 267, September 21, 1998
"There is more to art than meets the eye." The arts affect us in every aspect of our lives; they challenge us, inspire us, affect our emotions and feed our creativity.
Toronto is known for its community neighbourhoods. The Junction is a fine example that is supportive of its residents, businesses and the arts. Art plays an important role in The Junction, rich with artists and art-related events. The role of a gallery in the neighbourhood is a place where people can come to be a part of the local art community as artist or art lover. People can come to view art in inviting surroundings, meet artists and discuss the artwork. In a gallery, one can learn about collecting art, conserving it through framing, participate in collaborative projects, and celebrate special events.
One such project was in partnership between the West Toronto Junction Historical Society, the local businesses, artists and the community. The Local Option for Art Awards was a unique exhibit of community art celebrating the centennial of West Toronto Junction. For the project, the community was asked to submit art with a Junction theme. Junction businesses exhibited the work, ending with a fundraiser for the historical society at Latitude 44 Gallery Framing Décor.
At the annual art festival, Latitude 44 Gallery Framing Décor and local artist Reid English invited the community to bring found objects from home or work and build a 7-foot-tall sculpture together over the weekend. The creative participation and interaction was overwhelming.
Ongoing interaction of this sort between residents and art galleries is important to the health, development and vitality of the community.
The mandate of Latitude 44 Gallery Framing Décor is to showcase, support and preserve the work of Canadian artists. We encourage you to visit often, take your time, ask questions and give your opinion. Art is meant to evoke emotion. It doesn’t matter what you are drawn to, but how the art affects your interests and desires.
Janet DiBernardo is co-owner of Latitude 44 Gallery Framing Décor, located at 2900 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON M6P 1Y8, phone: 416-769-2900, website: www.latitude44gallery.ca, e-mail: latitude44gallery@bellnet.ca
