Three Robbin’s Ballet Pieces: Brilliant Canadian Tribute

"Glass Pieces" moved effortlessly and absorbed attention very much like flowing water or a camp fire that you can stare at forever. I would prefer to watch them from the balcony.

To enjoy "In the Night" you have to move closer to the orchestra to be in front of those three romantic and decadent duos. The shared 'Ah-hhh" went after the couples disappeared from the scene into the dark at the end of nocturnes.

In "The West Side Story Suite" the youth as always danced about eternal and generational. Puerto-Rican girls gave a fire in the America’s part as much as with accents as with attitudes. Maria was Russian by soul, and Jerome Robbins can rest assured.

Toronto’s deepest wish to be like New York City is three ballet steps closer now to become a reality.

Bravo National Ballet!

Three images of Salome are portrayed in this play: tragic, comic, and the one, which exists on "other side of good and evil". The birth of Salome as a theatrical figure, her existence and her death are at the centre of the action. Three different images of Salome are the masks, which are situated in the polemics with each other, and result in revealing of the character’s essence.

The Theater Laboratory of Vadim Maksimov (TL) was founded in Saint-Petersburg, Russia in 1984. The object of TL’s activity is experimental research in field of drama: European dramatic symbolism, Russian futurism, Oriental synthetic theater, Antonin Artaud’s “Théâtre de cruauté”. Since 1996 TL has followed directly in the development of Antonin Artaud’s dramatic theory.
The actors of TL take specific training, which was developed in TL in the course of the last 8 years. The training includes oriental practice of psychophysical self-regulation. It is based on the Artaud’s idea of human’s body “energy centres”. Every centre contains a set of senses and can be expressed in the form of plastic motions and voices. The specific training helps to escape from the everyday mask.
The main principle of TL’s performances is a rhythmic and psychoenergetic act organization, an integration of voice, gesture and word into a united impulse, which could completely affect on audience’s perception.
To date, Theater Laboratory has produced about twenty plays including world classical ones (Sophocles “Antigona”, Oscar Wild “Salome”, August Strindberg “The Dream Play”, Euripides/I. Brodsky “Medea”) and plays on modern European dramaturgy (“Fosse/Frostenson/Fragments”, Milorad Pavich “Party”). Some of the plays have never been performed in Russia before (Igor Terentev “Giordano Bruno”, Antonin Artaud “Samurai or ...”, Dzeami Motokie “Kagekie”, Jean Gene “Elle”, William Batler Yeats “Only jealousy of Emer”).

This event is a part of the International Education Week November 12th to 16th, 2007 at the International Student Centre (ISC) at the University of Toronto.

Russian Theme at the Planet in Focus Festival

The eighth annual Planet in Focus film festival is coming up in Toronto, and includes screenings of several documentaries about Russia.

International Environmental Film and Video Festival

Planet in Focus is Canada's most acclaimed International Environmental Film and Video festival. Our annual film fest showcases compelling documentaries, animation, dramatic features, shorts, and experimental works that celebrate, question, and establish varied ways of viewing the state of our world .

The 8th Annual Festival will take place October 24-28, 2007.

Edge of Eden: Living with Grizzlies
In Kamchatka, the most easterly region of Russia, a little miracle with huge implications is in the works. Considered by many to be the most dangerous animal in the world the grizzly bear, an endangered species, finds a protector and defender in Canadian conservationist, Charlie Russell. As a surrogate mother he struggles to reintroduce orphaned cubs to the wild against the backdrop of a dramatic landscape filled with lurking predators and poachers. Filmed in the course of a year, this relationship is bound to fill you with awe and sure to win your hearts and minds.

Blockade
Russian documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa brings the haunting images of the Siege of Leningrad back into our collective memory in his reflection on the atrocities that happened in the past, lest we forget. From September 1941 to January 1944, lasting over 900 days, Hitler attempted to starve the city of Leningrad into submission. The siege of Leningrad was the longest of its kind during World War II, causing over half a million people to die, mostly from starvation.
Using rarely seen footage from the Soviet film archives, Loznitsa recreates a stunning historical account of the Siege, creating a state of the art soundtrack to accompany the silent footage. Blockade shows the gradual transformation of Leningrad: from its defensive beginnings to a horrific aftermath.

SPUTNIK 1 - 50 Years of Space Exploration

On October 4, 2007, worldwide celebrations commemorate 50 years of space flight. On this day, five decades ago - October 4, 1957 - the first man-made satellite was launched into space, the first man-made object ever to orbit the Earth, captivating the public's imagination worldwide. No larger than a watermelon and weighing only 183 pounds, its "beep beep beep" signal from space was heard with baited breath as it traveled on its elliptical path.
"Now, somehow, in some new way, the sky seemed almost alien," wrote Lyndon B. Johnson. The launch of Sputnik ushered in a new era: the Space Age.

On October 4, 2007 we mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of this new age, an age of space competition and exploration, discovery and adventure, tragedy and exhilaration. At the Toronto Aerospace Museum, Critical Media presents a celebration in collaboration with the Canadian Space Society.

В КАНАДЕ ОТМЕЧАЮТ НАЧАЛО КОСМИЧЕСКОЙ ЭРЫ

4 октября 1957 года на околоземную орбиту был выведен первый в мире искусственный спутник Земли, открывший космическую эру в истории человечества.

4 октября этого года вся мировая общественность будет отмечать начало космической эры – с момента запуска первого спутника прошло ровно 50 лет!

Спутник, ставший первым искусственным небесным телом, был выведен на орбиту ракетой-носителем Р-7 с 5-го научно-исследовательского полигона министерства обороны СССР, получившего впоследствии наименование космодром Байконур. Космический аппарат ПС-1 (простейший спутник-1) представлял собой шар диаметром 58 сантиметров, весил 83,6 килограмма, был оснащен четырьмя штырьковыми антеннами длиной 2,4 и 2,9 метра для передачи сигналов, работающих от батареек передатчиков. Спутник ПС-1 летал 92 дня, до 4 января 1958 года, совершив 1440 оборотов вокруг Земли (около 60 млн. км), а его радиопередатчики работали в течение двух недель после старта. Над созданием искусственного спутника Земли во главе с основоположником практической космонавтики С.П.Королевым работали ученые М.В. Келдыш, М.К.Тихонравов, Н.С.Лидоренко, В.И.Лапко, Б.С.Чекунов и многие другие.
В Музее космонавтики Торонто (Toronto Aerospace Museum) это событие будет отмечаться особо. Среди мероприятий дня – презентации (в том числе проф. Университета Торонто Зелины Искандеровой – о становлении ракетно-космической промышленности в СССР), представления, дискуссии, демонстрация документальных фильмов.

I took a subway to go to the Junction
With a crystal halo tied up the Moon
I got tied too.
It was too late
Too much.
